Spartans Close Out 2011 Campaign
YORK, Pa. – The York College softball team closed out their 2011 campaign on Tuesday, falling to #14 Messiah by a narrow 3-1 margin. The loss drops the Spartans to 19-20 for the season while the Falcons improve to 32-5 on the year.
The visiting Falcons jumped on the board in the top of the first inning plating two in the frame. With runners on first and second with one out, Jessica Rhoads knocked a double into right centerfield to bring home Sara Seneca for the game's first run. Now with runners on second and third and still one out, Stephanie Schell lifted a fly ball into right allowing Elizabeth D'Amelio to race home on the sacrifice fly to establish the 2-0 advantage.
York slashed that lead in half as they scratched across a run in the bottom of the second. With Brittany Schlorff standing on second with two outs, left fielder Megan Markland came through with a clutch single into right. Going on contact, the Spartan shortstop came all the way home, reducing the deficit to a single run at 2-1.
Unfortunately for the Green and White, that lone tally would prove all they record on this day.
The bats quieted for both sides throughout the middle of the contest until Messiah picked up an insurance tally in the top of the seventh. With Falcons on second and third with two outs, Rhoads knocked a single into right, bringing in Seneca for Messiah's third and final run of the game.
For the contest, Messiah starter Sara Dietrich picked up the win in the circle as she threw all seven innings. Dietrich allowed three hits while striking out five.
Reliever Chelsea Bock entered in the top of the third inning for York as the young lefty proved quite effective against the talented Falcon squad. Bock threw five innings of six-hit softball while striking out four.
Senior third baseman Kelly Smith put together a 1-for-3 day in her final contest with the Spartans. She finds her name scattered throughout the program's record book after her stellar career. Smith is tied for first all-time with 167 games played (each of which she started), second in hits with 180, third in total bases with 261, third in at-bats with 507, and fourth in runs scored with 122.
York's final game of the 2011 season brings five Spartan careers to a close. Markland, Smith, Karen Carr, Michelle Barwick, and Desiree Halaka complete their senior campaigns in the Green and White. Over the past four seasons the Spartans have accumulated an overall record of 112-55, including a stellar 36-9 mark last year, while sporting a 34-14 record in Capital Athletic Conference regular season action.
