Spartans Fall to Sea Gulls in CAC Second Round

SALISBURY, MD – The York College softball team saw their 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament stay come to an end as the fourth-seeded Spartans fell to the top-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls 3-0 on Friday.

The Sea Gulls, who are ranked ninth in the nation, improve to 29-4 overall as they advance to the weekend portion of the double elimination tournament 2-0. The Spartans, losers of three straight, fall to 18-14 overall.

The game was tight in the opening three innings as neither team could get on the board. Salisbury ace Erika Brittingham was perfect through three innings while Spartan starter Brittany Therres was also outstanding as she allowed three base runners on two hits and an error through the first three frames.

Salisbury broke the scoreless deadlock in the fourth as Hannah Mills led off with a walk. Mills moved to second base on a throwing error and then to third on a sacrifice bunt by Casey Zaino. Zaino was safe on the fielder's choice as the Gulls had runners at first and third. Zaino stole second setting the stage for a pair of sacrifice flies that gave the Sea Gulls the 2-0 lead.

Salisbury added a run in the fifth as Michelle Gravdahl notched an RBI single, increasing the lead to 3-0.

The only drama left in the contest came as Brittingham carried a perfect game into the top of the seventh. Spartan senior Michelle Barwick stroked a single up the middle to break up Brittingham's attempt at perfection with no outs in the top of the final inning.

Brittingham was brilliant as she tossed the one-hit shutout while she struck out 14 without a walk. She improves to 19-3 overall.

Therres took the loss as she allowed two runs on three hits with a walk in 3-plus innings. She falls to 10-10 for the year. Freshman Chelsea Bock tossed the final three innings, allowing a run on two hits with a pair of walks.

Harley Hill led the Sea Gulls with three hits while Gravdahl was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hill and Gravdahl combined for all five of Salisbury's hits.

Barwick was the Spartans' lone base runner in the game.

The Spartans are now off until April 22 when they host Shenandoah in a non-conference twin bill. Game one from Spartan Stadium is set for 12:00 pm.
