FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College softball squad closed out their 2011 Capital Athletic Conference slate with a double header split against Mary Washington on Saturday. The Eagles won game one 2-1 in nine innings before the Spartans bounced back to register a 7-0 win in the nightcap.
The Spartans are now 17-11 overall and 6-6 in the CAC while the Eagles, who locked up the second seed in next week's tournament, are now 17-19 overall and 9-3 in the CAC.
In the opener, both teams scuffled offensively as neither squad could push across a run in the first seven innings of the game.
The tiebreaker rule then took effect as the Spartans plated the game's first run in the top of the eighth. It could have been a more fruitful inning for the Spartans but they left the bases loaded. York had the sacks jacked with just one out but were unable to get more than just the single tally.
The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, forcing a ninth frame. The Spartans could not produce a run scoring hit, leaving the door open for Mary Washington. The Eagles took advantage as they scored on a Brianna D'Agata sacrifice fly to center to win the game.
Nicole Black picked up the win in relief for the Eagles as she allowed an unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings. York junior Brittany Therres suffered the hard luck loss as she allowed a pair of unearned runs in 8.2 innings of work. She scattered eight hits with one strikeout and a walk. Therres falls to 9-8 with the loss.
Morgan Lamon and Amanda Adams each had two hits for the Eagles. D'Agata and Michelle Durnavich each had RBIs for the Eagles.
Freshman Emma Erbig and Therres each had two hits for the Spartans as they supplied half of the offense for the Green and White.
The Spartnas finished the game with 11 runs stranded while UMW had seven left on base.
In the nightcap, the two teams again struggled offensively as the first three innings were scoreless. York jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth as senior Kelly Smith tripled and scored on a Sarah Harris ground out to shortstop.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth as Erbig had a two-run double. York closed out the scoring with a four run sixth.
Freshman Chelsea Bock was the beneficiary of the Spartan offensive outburst as she picked up her eighth win of the year with the complete game effort. Bock tossed seven shutout innings as she scattered four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Danielle Cunetta suffered the loss as she allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits with three walks. Black came on in relief and allowed two runs on three hits with a pair of walks in two innings.
Bock and Smith powered the Spartan offense as they both had two hits and an RBI. Smith scored one run while Bock dented the plate twice. Erbig and Cory Urkuski each had a hit and a pair of RBI.
Kerry Busby led the Eagles with three hits as she was the offense for the hosts. Mary Washington had just four hits in the game as they were all singles.
York returns to action on Sunday afternoon as they host Bridgewater College in a non-conference twin bill. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm start as the first contest will be preceded by the 2011 Senior Day ceremony.
