Spartans Fall to Mustangs; Game Two Postponed

OWINGS MILLS, MD – The York College softball team lost one game to Stevenson and the other to the late winter weather on Wednesday afternoon in Owings Mills, MD. The Spartans lost the first game of the scheduled double header to the Mustangs, 4-3, and then had a 7-1 lead erased by a cold rain in the night cap. The game will be resumed at a later date.

The Spartans are now 15-7 overall and 4-1 in the CAC while the Mustangs pick up their first CAC win as they now stand at 1-4 while they are 11-9 overall.

The Green and White jumped out to an early lead as Hannah Hugel singled to left center to open the game. She advanced to second on a passed ball, and after Erin O'Leary walked, both Hugel and O'Leary scored on a Emma Erbig two-run double down the right field line. Mustang pitcher Julianne Roper extricated herself from more damage as she got out of the frame without any more Spartan damage.

The Mustangs got a run back on a Desirae Sullivan RBI single to left. Spartan starter Brittany Therres minimized the damage as she stranded runners at first and second to end the inning.

Stevenson took the lead for good in the second as they struck for a pair of runs on a two-run blast by shortstop Lisa Bilski. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third as Jessica Bandzwolek hit a solo homer to lead off the frame.

The Spartans had chances in the fifth and sixth innings as they stranded a pair of runners in both frames.

York staged a rally in the seventh. Jill Martin opened the inning with a walk followed by a Hugel single to third. Martin advanced to third on an error and Hugel eventually stole second followed by an O'Leary walk load the bases. Erbig drove home her third run of the game with a sacrifice fly as Martin's run cut the Spartan deficit to 4-3.  A ground ball out advanced Hugel to third and O'Leary to second but Roper got a strikeout to end the game and give the Spartans a tough conference loss.

Roper earned the win as she improves to 8-4. Roper allowed three runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Therres absorbed the loss as she falls to 8-4. She allowed four runs on four hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Chelsea Bock relieved Therres and was outstanding as she scattered two hits in four innings with a strikeout and a walk.

The Spartans stranded eight runners for the game as the Green and White pounded out 10 hits in addition to drawing four walks.

Hugel paced the Spartans as the sophomore was 3-for-4 with a run scored while freshman Erbig drove in all three Spartan runs with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly. Senior Michelle Barwick was the other Spartan with multiple hits as she was 2-for-4.
