YORK, Pa. – The York College softball team picked up a pair of Capital Athletic Conference victories on a chilly Monday afternoon in York. The Spartans bested visiting Hood 6-1 in game one before snagging an 8-5 triumph in the latter tilt. With those two triumphs, York has improved to 15-5 overall and a flawless 4-0 in league play while the Blazers drop to 3-19 and 2-4 in CAC action.
Junior hurler Brittany Therres threw a gem in game one to capture her eighth win of the 2011 campaign. The right-hander scattered six hits in her complete-game performance as the Blazers only scratched across one unearned run.
Tied at 1-1 through 4 ½ innings of the play, the Spartan offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on first and third and only one out, freshman Emma Erbig sent a three-run blast over the fence inside the left field foul pole to give York a 4-1 lead. On the very next pitch, Kelly Smith made it back-to-back jacks as she cracked her first round-tripper of 2011. The Spartans finished their scoring later in the inning as Erin O'Leary reached on an error allowing Brooke LaBell to come into score.
That 6-1 lead would prove all the Green and White would need as Therres finished out the final two innings, giving up only one hit in each frame, to give the Spartans the game one victory.
In game two, the Spartans grabbed the 8-5 triumph, bolstered by yet another five-run inning.
Once again tied at 1-1, with York's first run courtesy of Smith's second big fly of the day, the Green and White put a five-spot on the board in the bottom of the third.
Hannah Hugel, who went 4-for-4 in game two, led off the frame with a triple and was brought home on an O'Leary ground out. Following the second Spartan out, the Green and White scratched across four more runs in the inning. With the bases loaded, Sarah Harris knocked a three-run double into right plating Michelle Barwick, Erbig, and Desiree Halaka. Pinch-hitter Karen Carr then brought in Harris with a single into left to give the Spartans a 6-1 advantage.
Hood cut into York's lead with a run in the top of the fourth but the Green and White responded with one in the bottom of the frame. Hugel followed her triple in the third with a double in the fourth and then scored her second run of the game on a single by O'Leary.
Therres extended that advantage to 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth as she launched a homer well over the left field wall, her second longball of the season.
The Spartans ran into a bit of trouble in the top of the seventh as Hood put across three runs in the frame. Having already cut the lead to 8-5, the Blazers threatened to tie the score as they had two runners on with Jackie Wenzel at the plate. Fortunately for the home squad, Therres, who had come on earlier in relief for game-two starter Chelsea Bock, posted a game-ending strikeout to secure York's 15th win.
Bock, a freshman lefty, picks up her seventh win of the season as she tossed four innings, surrendered only two runs (one earned), and struck out three.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, March 30, when they travel to Stevenson. The CAC doubleheader is slated for a 3:30 pm start.
