Spartans Open CAC Slate up with Sweep
YORK, PA - The York College softball squad opened their Capital Athletic Conference portion of the schedule with a double header sweep of Wesley on a cold, brisk Friday afternoon in York. The Spartans won the opener 10-0 in five innings and completed the sweep with a 16-0 five inning win in the nightcap.
York is now 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the CAC while the Wolverines fall to 4-18 overall and 0-5 in the CAC.
The Spartans wasted little time in jumping on the Wolverines in the bottom of the first. After Wesley starter Taylor Hendricks retired the first two Spartans she faced, Spartan senior Michelle Barwick started the uprising with a bullet to centerfield that Jessica Barranco misplayed for an error. The Spartans made the Wolverines pay for that mistake as they eventually got three runs on two hits and two Wesley errors.
York added two runs in the second, three more in the third and finally two in the fourth to close out the scoring.
That would be more than enough for freshman lefty Chelsea Bock who was nearly perfect in the win. Bock gave up a bloop single in the first for her only blemish in the game. That batter who reached was quickly erased on a caught stealing. Bock faced just two over the minimum as a pair of Spartan errors allowed two of the three Wesley base runners.
Bock struck out two and did not walk a batter as she improves to 5-2 for the year.
Hendricks suffered the loss as she allowed 10 runs, with just three being earned, on 11 hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
Freshman Emma Erbig paced the game one offense, as she was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Senior Megan Markland also had three hits in addition to two RBI and a run scored. Senior Kelly Smith contributed two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
Ashlyn Booth had the Wolverines' lone hit with her soft first inning single.
In the nightcap, the Spartans erupted for a 13-run third inning en route to the easy win. York sent 18 hitters to the dish in the frame as they scored the 13 runs on just eight hits with five walks and a Wolverine error. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of senior Karen Carr as she crushed her second home run of the year in the middle of the big inning.
The Spartans added three runs in the fourth to provide for the final margin.
Junior Brittany Therres was dominate in her five inning outing as she scattered two hits with five strikeouts and two walks. She improves to 6-3 with the win.
Hendricks took the loss, her second of the day, as she allowed eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits in her 2.1 innings of work. She walked three and did not strikeout a batter.
Carr powered the Spartans as she was 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored. Senior Michelle Barwick contributed two hit, two runs scored, and one RBI. Sophomore Hannah Hugel was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored from her lead off position. Smith added two hits, a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
Booth was 1-for-1 for the Wolverines while Carmen Walsh was 1-for-2 including a fifth inning double.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Misericordia in a non-conference double header in York. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 pm.
