Spartans Conclude Two-Day Stay in Salisbury
SALISBURY, MD – The York College softball team dropped a pair of games during the second day of the Salisbury University Invitational in Salisbury, MD on Saturday. The Spartans were shutout in both contests, falling to Lynchburg, 2-0, in the opener and to Christopher Newport, 3-0, in the nightcap.
The Spartans fall to 8-4 overall while Lynchburg stands at 12-2 and Christopher Newport is now 12-4.
In the opener, the Hornets got to Spartan ace Brittany Therres for a single run in the third inning on a Taylor Walker RBI single. The Spartans had good chances to score in the second, the fifth, the sixth and the seventh innings but could not come up with the big hit with runners on base. York left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings and had the sacks packed in the seventh before a line drive double play ended the game.
The Hornets got an insurance run on a Sarah Smith RBI single in the seventh to account for the other run.
Katie Bruce earned the win for Lynchburg as she tossed six shutout innings, scattering seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts as she improves to 7-0. Tiffany Merrill earned the save as she worked out of the bases loaded jam in the seventh. It is her second save of the year.
Therres was tagged with the hard-luck loss as she allowed a run on three hits in her three innings of work. She struck out two and walked one. Freshman Chelsea Bock threw the final four innings, allowing a run on four hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Smith led Lynchburg, as she was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Walker was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Rachel Gallagher was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
In the nightcap, Christopher Newport's Whitney Haller handcuffed the Spartans on just two hits, as York could never get anything going at the dish in the contest.
The Captains got a run in the fourth off a Jessie Atkinson solo home run. CNU added two key insurance runs in the fifth as a Spartan error aided the uprising.
Haller improves to 5-1 with her complete-game gem. She struck out 11 and walked two in her two-hit shutout.
Therres suffered her second loss of the day despite throwing a strong four innings. The Spartan junior allowed a run on two hits with six strikeouts and a walk as she falls to 5-3. Bock pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit with a walk.
Atkinson's home run was her fifth of the year while Candice Zollars was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
After 12 games on the road, the Spartans will make their much awaited 2011 home debut on Tuesday afternoon as they host Susquehanna University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one is slated for 3:00 pm at Spartan Stadium.
