Spartans Open 2011 With a Pair of Wins
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The York College softball team successfully opened their 2011 season with a sweep of Cabrini and #15 Ohio Northern on Monday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Spartans defeated Cabrini 11-3 in five innings and then completed the sweep as they shut out the 15th ranked Polar Bears 9-0 in the nightcap.
The Spartans opened the season with a run in the top of the first as senior Kelly Smith laced a triple to score Desiree Halaka, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead over Cabrini. The Spartans added four runs on two hits and two errors in the second as the lead grew to 5-0.
York tallied three more runs in the third as senior Karen Carr led off the frame with a triple. She came around to score on freshman Emma Erbig's RBI double. Sarah Harris added an RBI ground out while junior Brittany Schlorff chipped in with an RBI single in the frame as the York lead grew to 8-0 through two and a half innings.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 11-0 in the fourth with three runs on three hits and a pair of Cavalier errors. Cabrini provided for the final 11-3 count with three runs in the bottom of the fifth but it would not be enough to send the game to the sixth inning as the eight-run run was in effect.
Junior Brittany Therres earned the win as she tossed three shutout innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Chelsea Bock made her collegiate debut and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks in her two innings of work.
Marcelle Crist suffered the loss as she allowed 11 runs, just two earned, on 12 hits with three walks and a strikeout in her five innings of action.
Harris paced the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-3 with a career-high five RBI. Halaka added two hits and three runs from her lead off position. Smith was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI for York.
Chrissy Squillace was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored for Cabrini while Kristin Whitmore chipped in with a hit and an RBI.
In the nightcap, the Spartans erupted for five runs in the second inning as Erbig opened the scoring with an RBI single. Harris then stroked a two-run single up the middle to extend the Spartan lead to 3-0. Senior Michelle Barwick then singled to right, scoring Harris and senior Megan Markland.
Markland added an RBI single in the third as the Spartan lead grew to 6-0. York closed out the scoring in the fourth with three runs. Smith started the scoring with an infield single while Erbig followed with a two-run double to right center as the Spartans put the game away.
Therres earned her second win of the day with her five-inning shutout. She allowed four hits with two strikeouts and no walks as she improves to 2-0. Lauren Hurd suffered the loss as she allowed five runs on two hits and two walks in her 1.1 innings of work. Katy Newman relieved Hurd and allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in her 2.2 innings of action.
Erbig paced the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Schlorff was 2-for-2 with a run scored while Smith was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Harris added two RBI and a run scored for the Spartans.
Four Polar Bears had singles in the games as they did not have a runner reach second base in the game.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday as they face Ohio Northern at 9:30 am followed by an 11:30 am game against Capital Athletic Conference foe Mary Washington.
