Seven Spartans Earn NFCA All-American Scholars
YORK, PA – Seven York College softball players have been honored as All-America Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for their academic accomplishments during the 2008-09 school year.
To earn the honor from the NFCA, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum of a 3.50 GPA for the academic year.
Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) led the Spartans last year in the classroom as the first baseman/outfielder finished with a 3.79 GPA as a business administration major. She was followed by outfielder Karen Carr (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) as Carr posted a 3.73 GPA as an accounting major.
Shortstop Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and outfielder Megan Markland (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) each finished last year with a GPA of 3.69. Bormann is a secondary education/general science major while Markland is a biology major.
Pitcher Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) is a business administration major and recorded a GPA of 3.65 during her freshman year. Outfielder Lindsay Wood (Owings, Md./Northern) finished just behind Therres as she had a 3.64 GPA as a criminal justice major for the Spartans. Infielder Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) was the seventh member of the Spartans to be recognized for academic accomplishment as she had a 3.50 GPA as a behavioral science major.
The Spartans were very impressive as a team as the 18-member squad finished with a cumulative GPA of 3.30.
Spartan head coach Jennifer Patrick-Swift was happy to see her players honored for their work in the classroom.
“I am very proud of our team for their accomplishments in the classroom,” states Patrick-Swift. “Our players truly represent what it means to be a student-athlete and are a credit to the type of players we have in the program. We strive to have student-athletes that are successful in all aspects of their lives.”
The Spartans open their 2010 season on February 28 in Florida at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee.
