YORK, PA – The York College softball squad closed out their 2010 Capital Athletic Conference regular season schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Gallaudet on a brisk Friday afternoon in York. The Spartans won both games in five innings, winning the opener 13-2 and cruising in the nightcap 22-1.
The Spartans are now 28-6 overall and 9-3 in the CAC while the Bison fall to 1-19 overall and 0-10 in the conference.
The Spartans were incredibly sluggish in the opener, surrendering a pair of runs in the top of the first. The Bison kept the Spartans off the board in the first and second innings as some shoddy York base running aided the Bison in keeping York off the board.
The Spartans finally got on the board courtesy of an eight-run third inning. The Green and White got their eight runs on six hits with a pair of Gallaudet errors in the frame. The Spartans added five runs in the fourth to provide for the final score.
Freshman Hannah Hugel (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) led the Spartan offense as she was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Julie Norris (Fredrick, Md./Frederick) was 1-for-1 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Alicia Johnson led the Bison offense as she was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI courtesy of her first inning two-run single.
Sophomore Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) earned in the win in relief as she threw four shutout innings. She allowed three hits and struck out seven without walking a batter in the win.
Johnson suffered the loss for the Bison. She allowed 13 runs, but just five earned, on 10 hits with six walks and a strikeout.
In the second game, the Spartans show no signs of their game one malaise. The Spartans scored quickly in the first with a pair of runs. They then exploded for 10 runs in the second, eight in the third and two more in the fourth to provide for lopsided contest.
Majczan won her second game of the day as she improves to 8-3 overall. She allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work.
Nicole O’Malley suffered the loss as she allowed 20 runs, only six earned, on 19 hits with seven walks and no strikeouts. O’Malley threw 117 pitches in just three innings of work.
Senior Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led the 20-hit Spartan attack as she was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Lawrence also stole two bases as she now has 26 for the season. Hugel, freshman Erin O’Leary (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Megan Markland (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace), and Desire Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) each added two hits for Spartans. Halaka banged out her first home run of the year as she had two RBI and two runs scored. O’Leary and Markland each had two RBI while Bormann was 1-for-2 with a team-high four RBI and one run scored.
Johnson again led the Bison offense as she had both of the Gallaudet base hits in the game.
The two wins lock the Spartans into the two seed for next week’s CAC Tournament. The Spartans will host the fifth seeded Stevenson University Mustangs on Tuesday, April 13.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday when they host DeSales University in a non-conference contest. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 pm.
