Not a Happy Monday for the Spartans as Bridgewater Sweeps

BRIDGEWATER, VA – The York College softball squad suffered their second consecutive doubleheader sweep as the Bridgewater Eagles took the broom to the Spartans, beating York 7-4 and 4-0 in a non-conference twin bill on a sunny Monday in Bridgewater, VA.

The Eagles improve to 18-7 overall while the Spartans, losers of four straight, fall to 24-6 overall.

In game one, the Eagles got on the board first as they tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the third courtesy of a Leah Cossentino RBI double and a Lauren Childress RBI single.

Bridgewater pushed the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth and then put the game away with a three run bottom of the fifth.

York cut into the Bridgewater lead with a four run top of the sixth. Megan Van Meter (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding) plated two runs with a two-run single. Senior catcher Julie Norris (Frederick, Md./Frederick) scored the other two runs with her two-run single.

The Spartans threatened in the top of the seventh but left two runners stranded as they lost their third straight for the first time this year.

Heather Jenkins earned the win as she allowed four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in her 6.1 innings of work. Jenkins improves to 5-1 with the victory. Lindsay Lam picked up her first save of the year as she got the final two outs for the Eagles.

Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk in her four innings of work. She falls to 5-3 with the loss.

Childress led the Eagles as she was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Hillary Rees added two hits, an RBI and a run scored while Cassie Thompson was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Angela Spinelli chipped in with two hits and two RBI in the win.

Junior Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) was the only Spartan with multiple hits as she was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Van Meter was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Norris was 1-for-1 with two runs batted in.

Game two saw the Spartans threaten to get something going in the first two innings. However after Norris bounced into a double play in the top of the second, Bridgewater pitcher Summer Ramsey retired 13 straight Spartans. When the streak started, the teams were locked in a scoreless tie. By the time Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) singled with two outs in the sixth, the Green and White trailed 4-0.

Spartan ace Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) suffered her second straight loss as she allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. She falls to 19-3 with the loss.

Ramsey earned the shutout win as she scattered three singles in her seven innings of work as she improves to 3-0. She struck out two and did not walk a batter during her outing.

Cossentino led the Eagles as the shortstop was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Hillary Rees was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Barwick was two-thirds of the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-3 while Smith had York’s other hit in the game.

The Spartans look to get back on the winning side of the ledger on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Wesley College for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. Game one in Dover, Delaware is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
