YORK, PA – York College’s softball
squad enjoyed yet another accolade to open their 2009 campaign as
sophomore third baseman Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St.
Vincent Pallotti) was chosen as a Capital Athletic
Conference Co-Player of the Week for the first week of March.
Procuring the honor alongside Smith is Salisbury catcher Lauren
Brenneman.
Smith, a 2009 preseason honorable mention
All-American, makes it two straight weeks that a Spartan has been
awarded Play-of-the-Week honors after freshman pitcher
Brittany Therres’ (Hughesville, Md./Thomas
Stone) accolade on March 2. For this week, Smith posted an
18-for-35 showing at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. to lead the
25th-ranked Spartans to a 7-3 performance. Her .514 batting average
in Kissimmee, which included three doubles, led to five RBIs and a
.600 slugging percentage. The sophomore was exceptionally hot
earlier in the week posting a pair of three-hit games to go along
with a two-hit affair.
For the season, Smith ranks first on the
squad in six offensive categories. The 2008 All-CAC
first-team choice posts the Spartans’ top marks in batting
average (.449), at-bats (49), hits (22), triples (2), and on-base
percentage (.481) while she is tied for the team-lead in total
bases (29).
