KISSIMMEE, FL – The 25th ranked York College Spartan softball squad rolled to a pair of wins on Friday as a part of their 2009 Spring Trip to the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Spartans defeated Clarke College 8-0 in six innings followed by a 5-3 victory over former Capital Athletic Conference rival Catholic University. The Spartans are 10-2 overall after the two wins.
Against Clarke, the Spartans got on the board first as they tallied two runs in the frame. York blew the game open in the fourth as they put up a five spot, putting the game out of reach. Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and Caitlin Keppler (Owings, Md./Northern) each had two RBI in the frame for York.
The Spartans ended the game in the sixth with a single run, invoking the eight run rule.
Freshman Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) was again outstanding as she twirled her third shutout of the year. Therres allowed just two hits while she struck out one in six innings. She did not walk a batter as she improves to 5-1 for the campaign.
Abby Nauman took the loss as she allowed two runs on three hits in three innings of work. Caitlin Woods followed Nauman and allowed six runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings of action.
Therres was the lone Spartan with multiple hits as she was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Bormann was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Megan Van Meter (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Keppler, the Spartans’ RBI leader, was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in.
Dani Cater had both of Clarke’s hits as the Crusaders could never get anything going against Therres.
Against Catholic, York got on the board right away as junior pitcher Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) launched a solo homer in the top of the first. The jack was Koehl’s second of the year. York added to the lead in the fourth on a Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) RBI double as the Spartan lead grew to 2-0.
Catholic cut their deficit in half with a single run in the bottom of the fourth, however, York tallied three runs in the top of the fifth to take command of the game. Keppler had a two-run double and Barwick added an RBI ground out to give York a 5-1 lead. The Cardinals picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth but Koehl gave up just two hits over the final two innings to preserve the win.
Koehl earned the win to improve to 5-1. She allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk in her seven innings of work.
Stacie Goddard suffered the loss for the Cardinals as he allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout in four innings of action. Brittany Sobieraj relieved Goddard and allowed three runs on three hits with a strikeout and walk in three innings.
Koehl led the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Keppler chipped in with a hit, two RBI, and a run scored. Barwick finished the game going 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Megan Rizzi led the Cardinals as she was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Tracey Scanlon was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Spartans conclude their trip Saturday as they face Trine at
1:00 pm followed by a game against Shenandoah at 3:00 pm.
