Spartans Split a Pair on Tuesday in Florida

KISSIMMEE, FLA – The York College softball team ran their win streak to seven before dropping their first game of the year on Tuesday in Kissimmee, FL. The Spartans opened the day with a 3-2 victory over Widener University. The Green and White then dropped their first game of the year as they lost to Adrian College 1-0. The Spartans are now 7-1 for the campaign.

In the win over Widener, the Spartans, much as they have all season, jumped out to an early lead. The Spartans reached Pride starter Kim Dougherty for two runs in the bottom of the first. Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) singled with one out and advanced to second on a Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) walk. The duo each moved up a base on a fielder’s choice before riding home on a Caitlin Keppler (Owings, Md./Northern) two-run single.

The Pride tied the game in the top of the third as Jamie Schmucker opened the inning with a home run, trimming the York lead to 2-1. Meg Phillips followed with a single. She then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and on to third on a ground out. Phillips then tied the game on a Stephanie Caulford RBI single.

The Spartans broke the tie in the bottom of the third as Lawrence singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, before she scored on a Keppler RBI single.

The Pride never really threatened the rest of the way as freshman Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) shut down Widener, allowing just two singles over the final four innings of play.

Therres earned her fourth win of the year as she allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. The complete game was her fourth in as many starts. Dougherty suffered the loss as she allowed three runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Keppler paced the Spartan offense as she was 3-for-3 with all three of the Spartans’ RBI in the game. Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) was also 3-for-3 in the game while Koehl was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Philllips was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Caulford was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The game against Adrian featured a pair of undefeated teams as York entered 7-0 and Adrian was 5-0. The Spartans had the first significant scoring chance in the top of the second as they loaded the bases with no outs. However, Bulldog starter Kelly Tomasek got a flyout, a fielder’s choice and a strikeout to extricate herself from the jam.

The Bulldogs reached Koehl, the Spartans’ starter, for the game’s lone run in the third as Krissy Sheets singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Erica Fracassa singled to move Sheets to third. Sheets then scored when Meghan Stevens singled, giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.

The Spartans got freshman Megan Van Meter (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to third with one out in the fifth but Tomasek got a flyout and a strikeout to get out of another jam. The Spartans would not be able to get the tying run across as they suffered their first shutout loss of the season.

Tomasek scattered three hits in the shutout as she struck out seven Spartans and walked two in the complete game effort.

Koehl was the hard luck loser as she allowed one run on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk in her six innings of action. She falls to 3-1 with the setback.

Stevens led the Bulldogs as she was 2-for3 with the game’s lone RBI. Katrina Wooten also had two hits for Adrian.

Van Meter had the Spartans’ only extra base hit with her double as York was held to a season-low three hits. Lawrence and Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) had York’s other hits.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday morning when they face Muskingum at 9:00 am followed by an 11:00 am contest against Maryville (MO.).
