Spartans Split A Pair; Break into NFCA Top 25
KISSIMMEE, FLA – The York College Spartan softball team continued their strong early season play as they split a twin bill during day three of their stay at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, FL. The Spartans defeated #13 Muskingum 8-0 in six innings before falling to Maryville (MO) 6-4 in the second game of the day. The Spartans are now 8-2 with the split.
The Spartans also received great news in the middle of the day as York entered the NFCA Top 25 for the first time in school history as they earned the 25th spot in the poll.
In the win over the nationally ranked Muskies, the Spartans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) began the uprising with a one out double. She then scored when junior Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) ripped a double of her own. After Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) walked, Caitlin Keppler (Owings, Md./Northern) stroked a two-run double to plate Koehl and Lawrence.
York upped the lead to 4-0 with an RBI single from Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) in the top of the third.
The Green and White increased their advantage to 7-0 in the fourth with three runs on just two hits and then closed out the game with a run in the top of the sixth.
That was more than enough for Koehl as she picked up her fourth win of the year. She tossed six shutout innings, scattering five hits with a strikeout and no walks.
Heather Martin tossed one inning for the Muskies as she suffered the loss. She allowed three runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Keppler continued her outstanding stay in Florida as she was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Koehl added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and Barwick each added a hit and an RBI in the win.
Mary Margaret Boda led the Muskies as she was 2-for-3 while three other Muskingum players had one hit each.
In the game against Maryville, the Saints jumped on the Spartans for a run in the top of the second and two more in the top of the third to take the early 3-0 lead. Maryville added two runs in the third and a run in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.
The Spartan offense finally got untracked in the seventh as they struck for four runs. York left the bases loaded in the seventh as they couldn’t push the tying runs across as they suffered just their second loss of the year.
Evelyn Drummond led the Saints as she was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Sarah Graham added two hits including the game’s lone home run, a solo shot in the second inning. Amanda Buffa was the third Saint to have multiple hits as she was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Smith paced the Spartan offense as she was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Keppler kept up her torrid pace with two hits and an pair of RBI. Lawrence had two hits for York while she also had an RBI.
Freshman Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) suffered her first loss as she allowed six runs, but only three earned, on 11 hits with six strikeouts and no walks. The loss drops her to 4-1 for the campaign.
