Spartan Offense Erupts in Sweep of Bison
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The York College
softball team outscored Gallaudet University 36-0 in a Capital
Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep on Tuesday in Washington,
DC. The Spartans won game one 22-0 in five innings and then rolled
to a 14-0 win in five innings in the nightcap.
The Spartans improve to 19-7 overall and 5-1 in the CAC. Gallaudet falls to 3-13 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
In game one, York scored two in the first, five runs in both the second and third innings followed by three in the fourth and seven in the fifth and final inning.
That was more than enough offense for pitcher Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) as she twirled a one-hit shutout. Therres lost her perfect game in the fourth as Rosemary Goodman singled. That would be the only blemish for Therres as she moves to 9-4 with the win. She did not walk a batter and struck out five with the one hit allowed.
Offensively for York, Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) was 4-for-5 with six RBI and four runs scored. Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) added four hits, three RBI, and a run scored while Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored from her lead off position. Julie Norris (Frederick, Md./Frederick) added two hits, three RBI and one run scored.
Kallie Williams suffered the loss for the Bison as she allowed all 22 runs, 21 of them earned, on 22 hits with five walks and no strikeouts. She falls to 1-4 with the loss.
In game two, the Spartan offense tallied three in the first, two in the second and third innings followed by a seven spot in the top of the fifth.
This time junior Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst. Koehl, like Therres, allowed just one hit. Keri Schmidt had a fourth inning bunt single and that would be the extent of the Bison offense. Koehl struck out seven and did not issue a walk as she improves to 10-3 overall.
Smith paced the Spartan offense as she was 5-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Norris was 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Bormann was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored while Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) came off the bench and was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Alicia Balzer was tagged with the loss as she allowed 14 runs on 20 hits with two walks as she falls to 1-4.
The Spartans finally return home for just their second home date
of the year on Saturday when they host Wesley College in a CAC twin
bill. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
