YORK, PA – The York College softball team
placed four players on the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference All-CAC
team as announced by the league office on late Wednesday
afternoon. Junior Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick
Memorial), sophomores Kelly Smith (Riverdale,
Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Kristen Gray
(Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional), and freshman
Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone)
each were recognized by the league’s coaches.
Smith makes her second All-CAC appearance in as many years as she
was named as the conference’s best third baseman. Smith, who
was a preseason All-American selection, has done nothing to
discount that preseason honor. Smith leads the squad with a .418
batting average while she also has a team-high 37 runs scored.
Smith also has 11 doubles, five triples, two home runs, and 21
RBI. She has a .610 slugging percentage and a .453 on-base
percentage. Smith has already tied the single-season school record
for hits with 59 while she ranks in the top five of five other
single season categories. Smith was named the CAC Player of
the Week on March 9 and she ranks first in the CAC in hits, second
in runs scored, first in triples, second in total bases, and tied
for first in stolen bases.
Gray earned her second All-CAC appearance as she has had an
outstanding sophomore campaign. Gray is hitting .404 with 21 RBI,
12 runs scored, seven doubles, and a home run in 89 at-bats for the
Green and White. She was a first team selection in 2008 and is
currently ranked eighth in the CAC in batting average.
Bormann makes her second appearance on the All-CAC team as she
earned a spot on the at-large portion of the squad. Bormann is
currently hitting .312 with 30 runs scored, 30 RBI, five doubles, a
triple, and a pair of home runs. She has a .373 on-base percentage
while she is tied with Smith for the team-lead with 15 stolen
bases. Bormann is tied for fifth in the CAC in RBI and tied
for first in stolen bases.
Therres made her impact on the Spartan line up immediately. The
freshman pitcher was dazzling all season long. She has notched a
record of 13-7 with an ERA of 1.56. Therres is ranked first in the
nation in walks per nine innings as she has issued just six free
passes in 134.2 innings of action this year. Therres has held
opponents to just a .226 batting average while she has seven
shutouts this year. She has struck out 74 in earning her first
All-CAC honors. Therres, who was the March 2 CAC Player of the
Week, is ranked fourth in the CAC in ERA and in victories.
The Spartans have six more games left in their 2009 season as they
currently own a mark of 27-12. The Green and White sit eighth in
the region as they need a strong finish to have an opportunity to
earn an at-large bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III
Tournament. The Spartans begin that final six game stretch on
Friday afternoon as they host Messiah College in a key
non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm at
Spartan Stadium.
