Spartans Open Campaign with Two Wins
PORTSMOUTH, VA-The York College softball team gave first-year head coach Jennifer Patrick a pair of victories to open the season as the Spartans went 2-0 on Friday at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Bash. The Spartans edged Averett 3-1 in the opener followed by an 8-0, five inning win over Meredith College.
The Spartans opened the day by allowing a run to Averett in the top of the first as Hayley Brooks lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Kaci Bently who opened the game with a walk.
The green and white answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), who opened the inning with a walk, came around to score when freshman Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) singled in her first collegiate at-bat, tying the game at one. Smith eventually came around to score as the Spartans led 2-1 after one.
The pitching then took over as Spartan starter Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) dominated from the second inning on. Mickles allowed just two hits over the final six innings as she picked up her first win of the year. Mickles tossed a complete game, allowing one run on a pair of hits with 12 strikeouts. She did walk five hitters, a number that will improve as the year progresses.
Sandra Dennison absorbed the loss as she allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk in her six innings of work.
Offensively, Bormann led the Spartans as she was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Smith, freshman Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney), and freshman Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) each added a pair of hits for YCP. Smith and Barwick each had on RBI while Smith also scored one run.
Brooks was 1-for-2 with an RBI to lead Averett.
In the win over Meredith, the green and white got the early lead as they tallied two runs on one hit with a pair of walks in the second. Amanda Atieh (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had an RBI single in the frame while Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) had a sacrifice fly. York added to the lead in the third as Smith added an RBI single, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead. A Bormann RBI single in the fourth increased the Spartan lead to 4-0 through four innings.
York finished the game with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth as the game ended early due to the eight-run rule.
Lahner picked up the shutout as she tossed five scoreless innings, scattering three hits with three strikeouts and one walk. She improves to 1-0 with the win. Becki Roebock suffered the loss as she allowed eight runs on eight hits with seven walks and five strikeouts.
Atieh led the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Bormann capped her stellar day with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Senior Andrea Tombesi (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) had a hit and two runs scored while Barwick was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Tamara Rhodes, Amber Littesy, and Roebock each had one hit for Meredith.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon as they face off against Methodist College, Coach Patrick’s alma mater, and Rutgers-Newark. The Methodist game starts at 2:00 pm followed by an 8:00 pm contest against Rutgers-Newark.
