Spartans Push Win Streak to Five with Sweep of McDaniel

YORK, PA-The York College softball team swept the McDaniel College Green Terror in a non-conference doubleheader on an overcast Sunday afternoon in York. The Spartans won game one 4-3 and completed the sweep with a 12-3 victory in the nightcap. The Spartans, winners of five straight, improve to 17-5 overall while the Green Terror falls to 5-13.

In the opener, the Spartans jumped on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame. Sophomore standout Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) stroked a two-strike double to right center. Fellow sophomore Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) moved Bormann to second with a sacrifice bunt and freshman Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) plated Bormann with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Green Terror took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Kelli Workmeister led off the inning with a bunt single in front of Spartan starter Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford). After a pop up, Diana Rosemier singled to short, beating the throw of Bormann, putting runners at first and second. Mickles got a pop up to short for the second out but Emily Trainor laced a two-run double off the left field wall, giving the guests the lead.

The Spartans recaptured the lead in the fifth. With one out, Amanda Atieh (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) singled off the third baseman's glove. Bormann followed with a bloop single down the left field line, putting the Spartans at first and second. Lawrence then singled to second base as Brittany King made a diving stop of the ball. Atieh never stopped rounding third as she scored. When the throw came to the plate attempting to get Atieh, Lawrence took off for second where she beat the throw. Bormann scored when Green Terror shortstop Lauren Toomey bobbled the ball on the throw attempting to nab Lawrence. Lawrence later advanced to third on a fly ball and then scored when Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) laced a single to left, giving the Spartans a 4-2 lead.

The Green Terror would not go quietly as Meagan Elfert reached on a catcher's interference call with two outs in the top of the seventh. Rosemier then launched a triple to deep center, cutting the York led to 4-3. Mickles got the final out of the game on a ground out to short.

Mickles earned the win as she improves to 8-2. She allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Christina Morley suffered the loss as she falls to 4-5. Morley allowed four runs on nine hits with one walk in her six innings of work.

Bormann continues to lead the Spartan offense as she went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Andrea Tombesi (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) added a pair of doubles while Lawrence was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Gray chipped in with an RBI for the Spartans.

Rosemier led the Green Terror as she was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Trainor was 1-for-3 with two RBI for McDaniel.

In game two, the Green Terror took the early 1-0 lead as Trainor drew a two-out walk. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Brittany King single. King stole second and when Atieh bobbled the throw, Trainor came home on the error.

York got that run back in the bottom of the first as Lawrence launched a one-out triple to deep center that almost got out of the yard for a home run. Lawrence scored when Smith squeezed her in, tying the game at one.

The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the second as Tombesi singled off the right field wall to open the inning. She advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on a two-out single to right by Afton Brugger (Westfield, Pa./Cowanesque Valley).

Tombesi continued her outstanding day in the third as she launched a two-run homer to right as the Spartan lead grew to 4-1.

York blew the game open in the fourth with an eight run fourth inning that featured nine Spartan hits.

McDaniel got a run in the top of the fifth but it would not be enough to keep the game from ending in the fifth.

Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) earned the win as she tossed 4.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits while she struck out five and walked one. Lahner improves to 7-1 overall with the victory.

Kate Phelan took the loss as she falls to 0-5 for the campaign. Phelan tossed 3.1 innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with one strikeout. Kelly Toms relieved Phelan and allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits in 0.2 innings of work.

Offensively, Bormann and Gray paced the green and white. Bormann was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Gray was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Tombesi was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Lindsay Wood (Owings, Md./Northern) added two hits, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Brugger finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of ribbies. Lawrence was the sixth Spartan with multiple hits in the game as she was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Trainor led the McDaniel offense, as she was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Kristina Skinner and Tommey each added a hit and a run scored for the Green Terror.

The Spartans, winners of 13 of their last 14 games, return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they host Gallaudet in a CAC twin bill. Game one is slated to start at 3:00 pm.
