Spartans Split Twinbill in Home Opener
YORK, PA-The York College softball team opened their 2008 home campaign with a double header split with Kings College on a sunny, yet very windy, Thursday afternoon in York. The Spartans won game one 7-6 in eight innings while the Monarchs won the nightcap 10-2. The Spartans are now 4-4 for the campaign while the Monarchs are now 7-3.
In the opener, York opened the home slate in style with a three-run bottom of the first. Freshman Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) plated the first run with an RBI fielder’s choice. Junior Ali Merrifield (York, Pa./Dallastown) drove in the second run with an infield single and then freshman Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) drove in the final run of the frame with an RBI ground out.
The Monarchs got one run back in the top of the second only to have the Spartans get that run back in the bottom of the second on a Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) RBI single.
The score remained 4-1 York through the next three innings before Leanne Harvey launched a three-run homer to left with two outs in the top of the sixth, tying the game at four. Harvey’s home run was a fly ball that got up into the stiff wind to left and flew out of the yard for her first tater of the year.
After both teams failed to score in the seventh, they went into the tiebreaker in the eighth. The Monarchs got two runs in the top of the eighth with some help from the Spartans as York had a pair of miscues in the frame. The Spartans responded in the bottom of the eighth. After Merrifield was placed on second, Gray reached on a throwing error from pitcher Kelsey Shreaves. Sophomore Amanda Atieh (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had a bunt single to load the bases as York had a rally cooking with no outs. Monarch ace Lindsey Hoerner relieved Shreaves and got an out at the plate on a force play. Sophomore Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) then tied the game with a roped double to left center, plating two and tying the game at six. Three pitches later, sophomore Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) ripped a single up the middle, scoring Lindsay Wood (Owings, Md./Northern) with the game-winning run.
Freshman Monica Weaver (Wagontown, Pa./Coatesville Area) earned her first collegiate win in relief as she tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing one hit. Spartan starter Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) struggled in the start as she allowed one run on two hits in two-plus innings of work. Mickles could not find the strike zone as she walked four in addition to her three strikeouts. Sophomore Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) was very good in relief as she tossed 5.1 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Shreaves suffered the loss as she allowed seven runs, four earned, on 11 hits with one strikeout and one walk in seven innings. Hoerner allowed two hits in her third of an inning of action.
Bormann led the Spartans as she was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Lawrence added two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Merrifield and Atieh each had two hits while Merrifield had an RBI and Atieh scored a run. Smith and Gray each notched a hit and an RBI in the game.
Harvey led the Kings offense as she was 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Shreaves was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Becky Loring was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
In the nightcap, York again got off to a fast start as they scored twice in the bottom of the first. Smith began the uprising with a two-out double off the wall in deep left center. She rode home when senior Andrea Tombesi (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) stroked a double to right. Barwick next plated Tombesi with a single down the left field line.
Kings got a single run in the top of the second and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Kings then exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth to take a 10-2 lead. The Spartans needed to plate at least one run in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to do that as the game ended due to the eight run rule.
Meaghan Galvin led the Monarchs as she was 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Annie Drimones was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Hoerner added two hits and two runs scored. Lauren DeCreny was the other Monarch with multiple hits as she was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Barwick led the Spartan offense as she was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Tombesi was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored while she also walked twice for York.
Hoerner earned the win as she allowed two runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work. The two earned runs were the first that Hoerner has allowed in over 28 innings in 2008.
Junior Nicole Kerfoot (Owings, Md./Northern) was tagged with the loss as she allowed six runs on nine hits with one walk in four innings of work. She falls to 0-2 with the loss. Weaver relieved Kerfoot and was tagged with four runs, two earned, on four hits with a walk in one inning.
The Spartans return to action on Monday afternoon as they travel to Millersville to face the Marauders in a twin bill.
