Spartans Remain Alive in CAC Tournament with 4-0 Win

SALISBURY, MD-The York College softball squad posted a 4-0 win over Hood College in the third round of the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday morning at Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD. The Spartans, the tournament's two seed, improves to 23-9 overall while the Blazers, the tournament's four seed, sees their tournament run come to an end as they now are 15-13 for the season.

The Spartans got on the board first in the bottom of the third as Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton), getting the start as the designated player for York, doubled to lead off the inning. Halaka was sacrificed to second and scored on a Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) single to center. Lawrence would steal second but would get stranded as the next two Spartans were retired.

York pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fourth as senior Andrea Tombesi (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) stroked a triple to right to lead off the inning. She came around to score when Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) singled through the left side for the RBI.
The green and white closed out the scoring with a two-run fifth inning as the Blazers committed a trio of errors that led to two runs.

Those four runs would be enough for Spartan starter Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) as she tossed six shutout innings. She struck out seven, did not walk a batter and scattered three hits as she improves to 10-3. Senior Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) tossed a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts as she closed the door on the Blazers.

Jamie Gardner took the loss as she allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks. She falls to 12-13 overall.

Offensively, Halaka and Lawrence led the way. Halaka was 2-for-3 with a run scored while Lawrence was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Barwick was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Sara Wastler, Ashley Lenhart, and Jen Willison each had a single for the Blazers.
The Spartans return to tournament action on Saturday afternoon as they face Villa Julie in an elimination game at 4:00 pm.
