Mickles Throws Perfect Game to Cap Spartan Sweep

YORK, PA-The York College softball team remained red hot with a sweep of Capital Athletic Conference foe Gallaudet on Tuesday in York. The Spartans won both games in five innings, capturing game one 10-0 and completing the sweep with a 23-0 romp in the nightcap. In the second game, senior Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) threw a five inning perfect game.

The Spartans, winners of seven straight overall and ten straight at home, improve to 19-5 overall and 8-0 in the CAC. The Bison fall to 5-16-1 overall and are still looking for their first CAC win as they stand at 0-8 in the league.

Mickles tossed the first perfect game in her stellar Spartan career. Mickles went 15 up and 15 down as she struck out 10 Bison. Mickles improves to 9-2 with the win.

The Spartans got all the scoring they would need in the first. The Spartans scored five runs on four hits with two Gallaudet errors as they seized the early lead. York poured it on in the second as they scored a season-high 15 runs on 13 hits with two more Gallaudet errors. The hosts added two runs in the third and one more in the fourth to close out the scoring.

Offensively in the second game, Andrea Tombesi (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) led the Spartan offense as she was 4-for-4 with seven RBI and three runs scored. She smacked her seventh home run of the year, and her third of the day, while she also had a double. Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), the reigning CAC Player-of-the-Week, had three hits, three runs scored, and one RBI. Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) added three hits, three RBI, and two runs scored while Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) added three hits, including a pair of doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Lindsay Wood (Owings, Md./Northern), Afton Brugger (Westfield, Pa./Cowanesque Valley), and Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) each contributed two hits to the 23-hit Spartan attack.

Jenna Owens was saddled with the loss for the Bison. She allowed 23 runs, 10 earned, on 23 hits with two walks and one strikeout.

In the opener, the Spartans jumped on the Bison for three runs in the first, six in the second, and one in the third. York starter Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) cruised through the first three innings of the game. She allowed two singles as she struck out five and did not walk a batter. Nicole Kerfoot (Owings, Md./Northern) tossed the final two innings and allowed just one hit with a pair of strikeouts. Lahner improves to 8-1 with the victory.

Owens suffered the loss in the opener as well as she threw four innings, allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on 12 hits with five walks and no strikeouts. With her two losses, Owens falls to 2-8 for the year.

The Spartans were led by Tombesi as she hit two home runs in the game. She drove in five and scored twice for YCP. Bormann had three hits and two runs cored while Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Gray each added two hits and an RBI to the Spartan offense. Wood also had two doubles for York.

The Bison were led by Alicia Balzer, Kallie Williams, and Caitlin Mosholder as they each had a single in the game.

The Spartans now take to the road for a pair of crucial CAC doubleheaders. York travels to Hood on Thursday and then to Salisbury on Saturday. The Hood twin bill begins Thursday at 3:00 pm in Frederick, Md.
