Spartans Extend Win Streak to Eight with Sweep of Etown

YORK, PA-The York College softball team remained red hot as they swept the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays in a non-conference doubleheader at York College on Tuesday. The Spartans, winners of eight straight, improve to 12-4 overall while the Blue Jays fall to 6-11. The Spartans won game one 3-2 and completed the sweep with a 7-1 win in the nightcap.

In game one, the Blue Jays jumped on Spartan starter Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) for two runs in the top of the first inning. Paige Tanner began the uprising with a walk to lead off the game. Lauren Hoover laid down a sacrifice bunt that the Spartans could not make a play on leaving runners at first and second. Both runners moved up on an illegal pitch before Lahner got the first out of the inning. Tanner scored on a Kelsea Corrado single to left. Lahner then got the second out of the frame before Holly Martin stroked a two out single to score Hoover with the Blue Jays’ second run.

Elizabethtown starter Alex Lee was very strong in the opening innings as she allowed just two Spartan base runners in the first three innings.

The green and white finally got on the board in the fourth as Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) began the frame with a bullet single off the third baseman. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a ground out to short and came home when senior Andrea Tombesi (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) plated Smith with a single to right.

York manufactured a run in the fifth to tie the game at two. With two outs, Heather Bormann singled up the middle. Bormann stole second and then strolled home when Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) scorched the ball back up the box for the game-tying RBI.

The green and white won the contest in the bottom of the sixth as York loaded the bases with one out. After Lee got the second out of the inning, she hit Jess Balch (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) with a pitch that scored pinch runner Megan Markland (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) for the game-winner.

Lahner pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn the win. Lahner allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeout and one walk. She improves to 6-0 with the win. Lee suffered the loss as she allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter. She falls to 5-6 for the campaign.

Offensively for York, Smith was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Bormann added a single, a stolen base and a run scored while Lawrence chipped in with a hit and an RBI. Tombesi was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Elizabethtown was led by Corrado and Martin as they were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sarah Church and Abbie Merrifield had the other hits for the Blue Jays.

The Spartans began game two in fine fashion with a four-run bottom of the first. Bormann led off with a double to left center. Lawrence laid down a beautiful bunt that resulted in a single. Smith then plated Bormann with a single. A double steal put Spartans at second and third. Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) placed down another great bunt that scored Lawrence easily on the squeeze. Pitcher Lisa Malehorn threw the ball away, allowing Smith to come around and score on the error. Barwick eventually came around to touch the plate on a Tombesi sacrifice fly.

York added one more in the second as Amanda Atieh walked, stole second and came around to score on a sharp Lawrence single up the middle. York finished the scoring with a pair of runs in the fourth. Bormann began the uprising with a single to left. A ground out moved Bormann to second and she scored on a Smith single to left. Smith advanced to second on an error by the leftfielder as she bobbled the ball, allowing Smith to take the extra base. After Barwick walked, Smith stole home as the Blue Jays threw down to second to get Barwick who was headed to second base. The Blue Jays got neither runner as both Spartans were safe.

Elizabethtown got their only run of the second game with an RBI single from Melissa Martin with two outs in the seventh inning.

Senior Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) earned the win as she went five innings allowing one hit with six strikeouts and two walks. She improves to 5-2 with the win. Lisa Malehorn took the loss as she allowed seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with three walks in four innings of work. She is now 1-5. Lee relieved Malehorn and allowed two hits with three strikeouts in her two innings of action.

Bormann led the Spartans as she was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Lawrence added two hits, an RBI and a run scored in three at-bats. Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Martin led the Blue Jays as she was 1-for-3 with an RBI while Holly Martin was 1-for-2 with a run scored.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday evening when they travel to Dickinson College for a non-conference twinbill. The action kicks off at 5:00 pm in Carlisle, PA.
