SALISBURY, MD-The York College softball team saw their nine game win streak come to a halt as the Salisbury University Sea Gulls wrestled control of the top spot in the Capital Athletic Conference from the Spartans with a conference sweep on Friday in Salisbury. The Spartans, who entered the day needing a split to capture the regular season title and home field advantage, dropped game one 5-1 before falling in the nightcap 11-0 in five innings. Despite the Spartans missing out on a chance to capture the regular season crown, the green and white will enter the tournament as the two seed and get a first round bye in the tournament which starts Tuesday.
The Sea Gulls improve to 23-7 overall and 9-1 in the conference while the Spartans fall to 21-7 overall and 10-2 in the conference. The doubleheader sweep is just the second time this season that the Spartans have failed to gain at least one win in a twinbill.
In the opener, the Sea Gulls got on the board first win single runs in the second and the third innings. The Gulls added three critical runs in the fifth as the Spartans put together eight hits but only got one run. In addition to the eight hits, Salisbury starter Stacy Davis walked five as the Spartans stranded a season-high 13 runners on base in the contest. The Spartans got their lone run in the seventh as Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) singled with the bases loaded and no outs. The Spartans then lined into a double play and then Davis got a strikeout to get out of the jam without any further damage.
Davis earned the win as she allowed one run on eight hits with eight strikeouts and the five walks. She also hit a batter as she improves to 14-3 for the campaign. York’s Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) took the loss as she allowed five runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in her 4.1 innings of work. She falls to 9-2 with the loss.
Lauren Brenneman led the Sea Gull offense as she was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored. Kristin Lord also went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) led the York offense as she was 2-for-2 with one run scored while Barwick also had two knocks and an RBI.
Game two saw the Sea Gulls explode for seven second inning runs as they put their foot on the gas and never looked back.
Kortni Pedlow kept the Spartan offense in check as she allowed one hit with one walk and one strikeout in her five shutout innings of work. Pedlow improves to 7-2 with the win. Senior Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), who had been simply outstanding this season, had her first bad outing of the campaign. Mickles allowed 11 runs, nine earned, on seven hits with five walks and four strikeouts in four innings of work. Mickles falls to 10-3 with the loss.
Jen Cahall was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI while Kelly Waskewicz was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Spartans lone hit came off the bat of Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) with her fourth inning double.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday as they host DeSales in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one on Sunday is scheduled for a 12:30 pm start. York will open the CAC tournament on Thursday as they will host the winner of Tuesday’s three seed vs. six seed game. All tournament pairings will be announced on Sunday after the conclusion of the regular season.
