Spartans Sweep Marauders on Monday
MILLERSVILLE, PA-The York College softball team swept a doubleheader against Division II Millersville University on Monday afternoon in Millersville, PA. The Spartans won game one 7-3 and completed the broom job with a 7-0 win in the nightcap. York improves to 6-4 overall while the Marauders fall to 8-9 for the campaign.
In the opener, the Marauders opened the scoring with a trio of runs in the bottom of the third. The Marauders strung together five hits in the inning but Spartan starter Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) got out of the inning allowing only three runs as she left two runners stranded. The Spartans wasted little time in getting those runs back and a little bit more. With two outs and two runners on in the top of the fourth, the Spartans got an RBI single from Ali Merrifield (York, Pa./Dallastown), a big error by Millersville that allowed two runs to score, an Amanda Atieh (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) a two-run RBI double, and a Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) RBI double as they finished the inning with six runs on five hits.
York added a single run on a Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) RBI single in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring.
Lahner was solid as she went the distance in the win. Lahner, who improves to 3-0, allowed three runs on seven hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Emily Fileger started and took the loss for the Marauders. Fileger allowed six runs, one earned, on five hits with two walks. She falls to 3-3 with the setback. Janelle Mrakovich relieved Fileger and allowed one run on one hit with three walks and one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work.
The Spartans had just six hits in the game as Bormann, Barwick, Merrifield and Atieh each had a hit and an RBI. The Spartans did draw five walks during the game.
Shaina Briel and Maria Polyak each had two hits to pace the Millersville offense.
In the second game, Spartan starter Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) was the story as the senior twirled a three-hit shutout. Mickles allowed three singles while she struck out seven. She did battle some control issues during the game as she walked four in her seven innings of work.
The Spartans got all the runs they needed in the first as Bormann tripled and scored on an Andrea Tombesi (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) double. Barwick then doubled to plate Tombesi with York’s second run of the inning.
York got three more runs in the fourth and closed out the scoring with two more runs in the sixth.
Bormann backed Mickles’ solid effort in the circle as she was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored while freshman Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in. Atieh concluded a solid day at the dish as she was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Alexa Ashwell, Janelle Mrakovich, and Brittany Orsini each had one hit for Millersville.
Courtney Eckman took the loss for Millersville as she allowed seven runs on 13 hits with five strikeouts and one walk in her complete game effort. She falls to 2-2 with the loss.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday as they open conference play against Villa Julie. The twin bill begins at 2:30 at Spartan Stadium.
