FREDERICK, MD-The York College softball team remained on a roll as the Spartans swept a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Hood College on Thursday afternoon in Frederick, MD. The Spartans captured game one 6-2 before completing the sweep with a 10-0, six inning win in the nightcap. The Spartans, winners of nine straight and 17 of their last 18 games, improve to 21-5 overall and 10-0 in the CAC. The Blazers fall to 15-9 overall and 5-5 in the conference.
In the opener, the green and white got on the board first as Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) laid down a bunt single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) double to center, giving the Spartans the 1-0 lead in the top of the first. York scored another run in the third as Lawrence singled to right, stole second, moved to third on another wild pitch and scored on a Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) RBI single.
The green and white tacked on two runs in the fourth as Afton Brugger (Westfield, Pa./Cowanesque Valley) had an RBI single and then scored on a Hood error. York pushed the lead to 6-0 with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. The Blazers got on the board with a pair of runs off reliever Monica Weaver (Wagontown, Pa./Coatesville Area Senior) in the bottom of the seventh.
York’s Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) earned the win as she tossed six innings of one-hit ball. Lahner walked one as she improves to 9-1 overall. Weaver allowed two runs on one hit, a walk and two strikeouts in her inning of work for York. Jamie Gardner took the loss as she allowed six runs, three earned, on 11 hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
Offensively, Gray banged out three hits with an RBI and a run scored. Lawrence was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Brugger also contributed two hits, an RBI and a run scored to the Spartan offense.
Jen Willison had a double and Sam Smith had a single for the Hood offense.
In the nightcap, it was another dominating performance from senior Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford). Mickles, who threw a five-inning perfect game on Tuesday, allowed one hit with one walk in her six-innings of shutout work. Mickles struck out 14 as she allowed a first inning walk, a first inning bunt single, and a hit batter to lead off the second. After that, Mickles retired 15 straight Blazers to improve to 10-2 for the season.
The Spartans provided Mickles with all the offense she would need in the top of the first. Lawrence singled through the left side with one out to get the rally started. Lawrence then stole second and scored when Gray stroked a single to center. Gray eventually came around to score on a wild pitch as York led 2-0 after their first at-bat.
The green and white increased the lead to 6-0 with a four run outburst in the top of the fourth. The Spartans added a run in the top of the fifth and closed out the scoring with three runs in the sixth.
Gray continued her big day as she was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Senior Andrea Tombesi (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) added two hits and an RBI. Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Brugger was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
Sara Wastler had the Blazers’ lone hit, a first inning bunt single.
Gardner took the loss for the Blazers a she allowed two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of work She walked one and did not post a strikeout as she falls to 12-9 overall with the two losses. Erica Hamor tossed the remaining 4.1 innings as she allowed eight runs, three earned, on eight hits.
The Spartans return to action on Friday as they travel to Salisbury University for a key CAC twinbill. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday but were moved up one day due to expected bad weather in Salisbury, MD on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm on Friday.
