CARLISLE, PA-The York College softball team saw their eight game win streak come to an end as they split a non-conference doubleheader at Dickinson College on a rainy and cold Thursday evening in Carlisle, PA. The Red Devils captured game one 5-3 while the Spartans bounced back to win game two 9-0 in five innings. The Spartans are now 13-5 overall while the Red Devils are 13-9.
In game one, the Red Devils jumped on Spartan starter Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) for two runs in both the first and second innings. In the first, Kyrie Budnik had a two run double to get the Devils on the board. In the second, Lahner got the first two outs of the inning only to have Grace Perry single and Rachel Fleming follow with a single of her own. A pair of stolen bases put the two Red Devils in scoring position where Jess Burger singled to score two. The Red Devils knocked Lahner from the game in the third as they added a unearned run to take a 5-0 lead.
The Spartan offense got on the board in the fourth as freshman Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) singled with one out. Smith stole second and then stole third before coming home on a Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) RBI single.
York got one run closer in the sixth as Sam Lawrence
(Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) scored on a Michelle
Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) squeeze. The Spartans
closed out the scoring in the seventh as Heather Bormann
(Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) drove home pinch runner
Megan Markland (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de
Grace) with an RBI single. Unfortunately, the Spartans
would be unable to overcome the early Dickinson scoring and their
own four errors in the game.
Allison Jordan earned the win as she tossed a complete game for the Red Devils. Jordan allowed three runs on seven hits with 12 strikeouts and just one walk. She improves to 9-3 with the win. Lahner suffered her first loss of the year as she went 2.2 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits with one walk. Lahner is now 6-1 for the campaign. Nicole Kerfoot (Owings, Md./Northern) tossed the final 3.1 innings. She held the Red Devils off the board as she allowed two hits while she struck out two and walked just one.
Burger and Budnik led the Red Devils as they were both 2-for-3 with two RBI. Budnik also scored one run for the hosts. Fleming was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Spartan offense was led by Smith as she was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Gray and Bormann each added a hit and an RBI while Lawrence was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
The nightcap saw the Spartans strike first as Bormann singled, advanced to second on a Lawrence sacrifice, moved to third on a ground out and scored when she stole home.
The green and white did not score in the second or third innings but exploded for four runs in the fourth. Sophomore Amanda Atieh (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) began the scoring in the inning with an RBI single. The Spartans got a second run on the passed ball followed by an RBI ground out from Afton Brugger (Westfield, Pa./Cowanesque Valley). Karen Carr (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) completed the scoring with an RBI ground out of her own as the Spartans led 5-0 through three and a half innings.
The Spartans scored four more times in the fifth courtesy of four hits as the nine run outburst ended the game after five innings.
Senior starter Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) was the beneficiary of the Spartan offensive onslaught as she tossed a five-inning shutout. Mickles allowed just three hits but she did walk five as she had to work out of trouble all night. She walked five as she improves to 6-2 overall.
Liz Barry suffered the loss for Dickinson as she allowed nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits in five innings. She walked four and struck out three as she falls to 4-6 for the season.
The Spartan offense was led by Bormann as she continues to swing a hot bat. Bormann was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Atieh added a hit, an pair of RBI and a run scored while Brugger was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Smith was 1-for-2 with two runs scored for York.
Fleming, Erin King, and Kaitlyn McDonald had the Dickinson hits in the game. McDonald’s hit was a double while King had a triple with one out in the first but Mickles got a pop up and a fly out to get out of the jam.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Wesley College to face the Wolverines in a CAC double dip. Game one is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm in Dover, Del.
