Spartans Drop Twinbill at Bridgewater
BRIDGEWATER, VA-The York College softball team took to the field for the first time in 14 days as the Spartans dropped a non-conference twinbill at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles captured game one 6-5 in eight innings and then completed the sweep with a 7-1 win in the second game. The Spartans fall to 3-3 overall while the Eagles improve to 4-7. The games were the first since the Spartans opened the season on February 29 and March 1 at Virginia Wesleyan’s Beach Bash Tournament.
In the opener, the Spartans tallied a trio of runs in the top of the first. Two of those runs came on a tater from freshman Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti). Junior Ali Merrifield (York, Pa./Dallastown) drove in the other Spartan run in the inning with an RBI single. The Eagles got two of those runs back in the bottom of the frame as the contest had all the appearances of a slugfest. York added two runs in the top of the second as senior Andrea Tombesi (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) had an RBI double and she scored on a second Merrifield RBI single. The Eagles got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second, cutting the York lead to 5-3 through two innings.
After three and a half scoreless innings, the Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of three hits and a pair of wild pitches.
With the extra inning, tie breaking rule in effect, the Spartans were unable to execute and get the runner in from second in their top of the eighth. The Eagles did not have any problems getting home the runner from second but the Spartans aided in the run scoring with an error.
Kristen Combs and Jennifer Hall each had two hits and tow runs scored to led the Eagles. Kaitlyn Bowman added a hit, two RBI and a run scored while Laura Barry was 1-for-5 with two RBI.
Sophomore Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) led the Spartan offense with a game-high three hits while she scored two of the Spartans’ five runs. Smith added two RBI and a run scored on her first collegiate home run. Tombesi was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Merrifield was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Freshman Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) contributed a pair of hits to the Spartan offense.
Ashley Gills earned the win in relief for the Eagles. She tossed 6.1 innings, allowing just two hits while she struck out three. Bridgewater starter Becky Schmidt surrendered five runs on nine hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Spartan starter Megan Lahner (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) tossed six innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts. Lahner struggled with her control as she walked six Eagles in the game. Megan Mickles (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) was tagged with the loss as she relieved Lahner in the seventh. Mickles walked two in the seventh but was able to get out of the inning without any damage but she wasn’t so lucky in the eighth as she falls to 1-2.
The nightcap was a close contest through the first four innings. York struck first as Bormann singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a Smith single in the top of the first. The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the third on a Bowman RBI double.
Bridgewater took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer off Bowman’s bat. Bowman then capped the scoring in the sixth as she jacked a grand-slam, accounting for all seven Bridgewater runs.
Bowman finished the game 4-for-4 with seven RBI and two runs scored. Hall was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Elizabeth Smith was the third Eagle with multiple hits as she was 2-for-3.
Bormann was 1-for-3 with one run scored while Smith was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Merrifield was the only other Spartan that collected a hit in the game as the Spartans had just three knocks in the game.
Lindsay Lam earned the win as she went the distance, scattering three hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Junior Nicole Kerfoot (Owings, Md./Northern) was tagged with the loss in relief of starter Monica Weaver (Wagontown, Pa./Coatesville Area). Kerfoot allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of work. She falls to 0-1 for the campaign. Weaver allowed one run on five hits in three innings. She struck out two and did not walk any hitters in her first collegiate start. Mickles tossed the sixth and allowed four unearned runs on three hits while she struck out two.
The Spartans are scheduled to open their home campaign on Thursday afternoon as they host Kings College in a non-conference twin bill. Game one is scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm.
