ALLENTOWN, PA – The York College men's cross country squad concluded their 2018 campaign with a ninth place finish at the 2018 NCAA Division III Mid-East Regional championships in Allentown, PA on Saturday.
The Spartans, who won a Capital Athletic Conference Championship two weeks ago, totaled 290 points as they were comfortably in the top 10 of the 52-team field. Carnegie Mellon earned the team title with 76 points followed by Haverford (84 points), Johns Hopkins (134 points), Messiah (181 points), and Elizabethtown (224 points) to round out the top five teams.
Top Spartan Performers
• Senior Ray Smith capped a stellar final year in the Green and White as he placed 18th overall with a time of 26:31. The finish earns Smith his first All-Region honors after being a first-team All-CAC finisher two weeks ago.
• Senior Ben Linne was the next Spartan to cross the line as he finished with a time of 27:21, good for a 47th place finish. Fellow senior Matt Zubrycki was the third Spartan finisher as he posted a nice time of 27:46 as he placed 69th.
• Freshman Justin Smyth was right behind Zubrycki as he placed 70th with a time of 27:47. Fellow freshman Benjamin Russell was York's next finisher as he crossed the line in a time of 28:04. Russell's time gave him an 86th place finish.
• Two sophomores rounded out York's top seven as Jake O'Neill and Drew Alansky placed 143rd and 204th respectively. O'Neill finished with a time of 28:50 while Alansky crossed the line in a time of 29:52.
The Spartans finished fourth at last year's regionals en route to the program's first-ever NCAA Championship berth … York notched their fourth straight top ten finish at the regional championships as they finished 10th, 4th, and 4th the previous three years …. There were 357 runners participating in Saturday's championship meet … freshman Justin Smyth was recognized as one of the top freshmen at the regional as he finished seventh among the first year runners.
The regional championship closes out a successful Spartan fall for the cross country squad. The Spartans will say good bye to seniors Ray Smith, Ben Linne, Matt Zubrycki, Jordan Blankenship, Nicholas Miguelino, Brandon Tocket, Darren Webb, and Kieran White.
