Spartan Men Win Lock Haven Open on Saturday

LOCK HAVEN, PA – The York College men's cross country squad had a banner day on Saturday as they won the team championship at the 2018 Lock Haven Open hosted by Lock Haven University.

The Spartans finished the event with 83 points, besting the Penn State Club Cross Country squad and Lock Haven as they tied for second with 86 points. West Chester finished fourth with 147 points while Juniata rounded out the top five with 175 points. There were 16 teams and 222 runners competing in the event.

 

Top Spartan Finishers

Senior Ray Smith had a banner day as the placed third overall in the race, clocking in with a time of 25.48.1. Smith was just under four seconds out of a runner up finish. Individual medalist Josh Coakley from West Chester won the title with a time of 25:39.9. The third place finish is the best of Smith's Spartan career.

• Senior Ben Linne was York's next finisher as he placed ninth overall with a time of 26:05.1. Linne was followed by fellow senior Matt Zubrycki who was 16th with a time of 26:14.2.

• York added two more runners in the top 30 as sophomore Jake O'Neill finished 26th while freshman Justin Smyth was 29th. O'Neill's time was 26:27.5 while Smyth crossed the line in a time of 26:34.1.

• Sophomores Drew Alansky and Daniel Forry rounded out the Spartans' top seven finishers for the day. Alansky finished 39th with a time of 26:51.1 while Forry placed 52nd with a time of 27:06.0.

 

He Said It

"The men really showed well today," said Spartan head coach Stephen LoBianco. "The top five really worked well together for the first part of the race. We focused on moving up in the last two miles and were able to do that. Overall, we were aiming for a top two finish as a team. Putting five men in the top 30 and winning the event as a team was great. The team dynamic is really pushing this team towards the next step."

 

Up Next

The Spartans are now off until October 13 when they head to Glassboro, New Jersey to participate in the Inter-Regional Border Battle hosted by Rowan University. The event is slated for an 11:00 am start.
