Hartung Takes Eighth as Spartans Finish Fifth at Piper Challenge

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The York College men's cross country squad competed at the Galen E. Piper Alumni Open / Cross Country Challenge Friday evening at Shippensburg University. In an under-the-lights event, the Spartans took fifth out of eight schools in the 6k race.

"Overall a great showing at the meet," Spartan head coach Stephen LoBianco said. "The best times as a team in a 6k in recent history. The guys worked together the first few laps and then had a strong last 2k."

Senior Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa. / Governor Mifflin) paced the Green and White as he put together yet another quality performance. Hartung, who finished eighth overall out of 125 runners, was the top Division III finisher as he crossed the line at 19:25.

York rookies Matt Hayes (Drexel Hill, Pa. / Cardinal O'Hara) and James Gonzales (Baltimore, Md. / Dundalk) proved the Spartans' second and third finishers with times of 20:06 and 20:22, respectively. For their efforts, Hayes snagged 24th overall and Gonzales 37th while Coach LoBianco noted that both "had very good paced races and solid last 1ks."

Notching a pair of personal-records at the 6,000-meter distance, Will Murray (Cape May Court House, N.J. / Brick Township) and Craig Eppler (Bethlehem, Pa. / Northampton) each ran solid races. Murray clocked in at 20:38 while Eppler registered a 20:42.

York returns to action on Saturday, September 14, as hosts of the 2013 edition of the Coach Achtzehn Classic. Start time from John Rudy Park is slated for 11:00 am.
