Spartans Open Title Defense at Lehigh Invitational
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The York College men's cross country squad opened up their defense of their two-year streak as Capital Athletic Conference champions, competing at the Lehigh Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning. In their first event of the season, the Spartans took seventh out of 14 teams.
"I am happy with how the team worked together and everyone was able to have a strong last 1k of the race," Spartan head coach Stephen LoBianco said. "(Our) freshman looked solid. Running a paced race today paid off in the end. I am excited for the first 8k in two weeks at the home meet on September 14."
Senior standout Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa. / Governor Mifflin) proved the first finisher for the Green and White as the 2012 All-American crossed the line at 20:23.41. Racing against numerous Division I student-athletes, Hartung placed 41st out of 184 competitors.
Newcomer Matt Hayes (Drexel Hill, Pa. / Cardinal O'Hara) completed the 6k course just two spots behind Hartung to post 43rd in his first collegiate race at 20:26.30.
Nabbing 45th overall, Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) traversed the course in 20:33.35 while freshman James Gonzales (Baltimore, Md. / Dundalk) recorded a 50th-place 20:37.72 to kick off his Spartan career.
