LoBianco Named New Cross Country and Track & Field Coach

YORK, PA – York College Assistant Dean of Athletics and Recreation Paul Saikia is happy to announce that Stephen LoBianco has been named the Spartans' new head cross country and track & field coach.

LoBianco succeeds Erick Camodeca who stepped down in August to take a job at Division I Loyola (Md.) Maryland.

LoBianco is no stranger to the Spartan program. He had served as Camodeca's distance coach for the last four years.

"I want to thank Dr. Gunter-Smith, Dean Joe Merkle and Paul Saikia for the opportunity to guide the cross country and track & field programs. It is an honor to get to work with such a fine group of student-athletes," says LoBianco.

LoBianco has worked closely with the distance runners as a Spartan assistant and is prepared to work with the variety of track & field disciplines.

"I have a good staff that will be able to give our student-athletes the best possible training. Despite the fact I will be running the overall program, I believe in really coaching and training our student-athletes."

Saikia is pleased to elevate LoBianco to the head coaching position.

"Losing our head coach so close to the start of the semester and the Cross Country season was difficult, but we had an awesome response to the job posting and, in the end, hired someone we feel is not only qualified, but passionate about cross country and track and field, has a proven history of effectively handling student-athletes, understands recruiting, and is hungry to win. Stephen's familiarity with the programs and the College were not deciding factors in his hiring, but are certainly great bonuses."

LoBianco was a four-year cross country and track & field athlete at Shippensburg University as he graduated in 2007. He was the Red Raiders team captain for cross country and also for track & field distance his senior year. He graduated from Shippensburg with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a general management degree. He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business fraternity.

"Coach Cam and I often saw eye to eye on how we were going to do things as a program," states LoBianco. "The one thing that always stood out to me was that he was always there whether it was jumps, distance or throws. He was always around for our kids and I will be the same type of coach."

LoBianco wants to continue to build on the tradition of York College cross country and track & field.

"We had a great recruiting class this year and I want to keep that going. We have a large group of talented seniors this year so it will be imperative to keep the flow of good student-athletes coming into the program."

Saikia sees great things for the programs under LoBianco's guidance.

"Under Coach Camodeca, our cross country and track and field programs made great advances over the last several years. With Coach LoBianco's leadership, I am confident we will remain on an upward path with more conference championships, national qualifiers, and All-Americans in our future."

LoBianco's goals are very straightforward for his Spartan teams.

"I want us to keep winning championships! I would love for the ladies to get into the act and capture some conference crowns. I don't believe they are very far off from breaking through and capturing a number of championships."

LoBianco begins his duties immediately. He will make his coaching debut on Saturday, August 31 at the Lehigh University Cross Country Invitational.
