Spartans Snag Third at Goucher Classic
TOWSON, Md. – Continuing to prepare for next month's
rapidly approaching Capital Athletic Conference Championships, the
York College men's cross country squad put together a strong
showing at the Goucher College Classic Saturday morning in Towson,
Md. The Spartans registered a third-place overall finish out of the
12 teams present, collecting 118 points. The US Navy plebe squad
secured first with an incredible 20 points.
Rookie sensation Tim Hartung continued
his outstanding freshman year as he again paced the Green and
White, marking the third consecutive race in which he posted York's
best time. Hartung traversed the 8,000-meter course in 28:31.00 to
take 11th out of the 114 participants.
Sophomore teammate Steven Childres,
who along with Hartung form a formidable young duo, placed 12th at
the annual Goucher meet. Childres recorded a 28:40.00, notching the
Spartans' second-best time.
York's third top-20 finish came courtesy of senior Andrew
Friesema. The Spartan veteran covered the course in 28:52.30 to
register a 16th place.
Craig Eppler
and Matt Smith,
two more promising youngsters, rounded out York's top-five.
Eppler's 30:08.10 was good for 38th, while Smith came in 52nd with
a 30:50.60.
Newcomer Joe Corrigan, who joined the Spartans mid-way through the
season, competed well in his first race, finishing with a
62nd-place 31:10.80.
With next Saturday off from competition, the Green and White
return to racing action on Saturday, October 23, when they travel
to Lancaster County Central Park for the Battle of the Buggy
Invitational. Race time is slated for 10:00 am.
