Spartans Snag Third at Goucher Classic

TOWSON, Md. – Continuing to prepare for next month's rapidly approaching Capital Athletic Conference Championships, the York College men's cross country squad put together a strong showing at the Goucher College Classic Saturday morning in Towson, Md. The Spartans registered a third-place overall finish out of the 12 teams present, collecting 118 points. The US Navy plebe squad secured first with an incredible 20 points.

Rookie sensation Tim Hartung continued his outstanding freshman year as he again paced the Green and White, marking the third consecutive race in which he posted York's best time. Hartung traversed the 8,000-meter course in 28:31.00 to take 11th out of the 114 participants.

Sophomore teammate Steven Childres, who along with Hartung form a formidable young duo, placed 12th at the annual Goucher meet. Childres recorded a 28:40.00, notching the Spartans' second-best time.

York's third top-20 finish came courtesy of senior Andrew Friesema. The Spartan veteran covered the course in 28:52.30 to register a 16th place.

Craig Eppler and Matt Smith, two more promising youngsters, rounded out York's top-five. Eppler's 30:08.10 was good for 38th, while Smith came in 52nd with a 30:50.60.

Newcomer Joe Corrigan, who joined the Spartans mid-way through the season, competed well in his first race, finishing with a 62nd-place 31:10.80.

With next Saturday off from competition, the Green and White return to racing action on Saturday, October 23, when they travel to Lancaster County Central Park for the Battle of the Buggy Invitational. Race time is slated for 10:00 am.
