WESTMINSTER, MD – The York College men’s cross country team got off to a solid start to their 2009 season Saturday morning at the McDaniel College Green Terror Challenge. The Spartans finished second in the seven-team 5k event, while taking third out of seven squads in the 3k portion of the meet.
The Green and White put six runners in the top-twenty including a pair of top-ten finishes in the 54-participant 5k. Paul Wallace (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) turned in York’s top mark with a time of 17:33. Wallace’s 5,000-meter time secured eighth place for the junior. Bret Kilefner (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) joined Wallace in the top-ten, notching his tenth-place finish with a time of 17:41. Ryan Janes (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) nabbed 15th crossing the line at 17:50 while Andrew Friesma (Adamstown, Pa./Cocalico) and Matt Provonche (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright) secured the two spots behind the senior with times of 17:51 and 17:53, respectively. Sophomore Patrick Lestrange (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) landed in 19th with an 18:04 showing.
For the event, the Spartans posted a total time of 1:10:55 while averaging 17:43.75 over the 5k course.
The 3k event saw the York squad place a trio of runners in the top-twenty, landing one in the top-five. Freshman Steven Childres (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Saint Joseph) notched a fourth-place time, making a quick splash in just his first collegiate meet. Friesma would take 11th in the race while junior Justin Severini (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) garnered 20th out of 55 runners.
The Spartans return home next Saturday, September 19, to host the first of two York Invitationals. Race time is slated for a 10:30 am start at John Rudy Park.
