TOWSON, MD – The York College men’s cross country squad picked up four top-15 finishes Saturday as they took second overall at the five-team Goucher Classic.
Freshman sensation Steven Childres (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Saint Joseph) captured the Spartans’ top time. Childres finished the 8,000-meter course in 28:39.91 to nab a eighth-place individual spot. Andrew Friesema (Adamstown, Pa./Cocalico) came in a mere five-hundredths of a second behind Childres, taking ninth with a time of 28:40.41.
The Green and White’s Ryan Janes (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) was York’s third finisher as he completed the race in 28:51.80. Janes’ time resulted in an eleventh-place finish for the senior.
Junior All-Capital Athletic Conference performer Matt Provonche (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright) took the Spartans’ fourth top-15 finish. Provonche traversed the course in 28:55:54 to garner 13th.
Greg Bivona (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook Senior) and Patrick Lestrange (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) finished 19th and 20th respectively for the Green and White. Bivona covered the race in 30:03.84 while Lestrange completed the course in 30:10.66.
As a team, the Green and White averaged 29:02.30 with a total time of 2:25:11.50. The only team to best the Spartans at the Classic was the Naval Academy’s “B” Squad, which posted the top-two individual finishers.
The Spartans now return to training as they prepare for the Hood Open next Saturday, October 17. The race in Frederick, Md. will take place at Heritage Farm Park the same venue that will host the CAC Championships on November 7, providing the Green and White with an opportunity to preview the course.
