SELINSGROVE, PA – The York College men's track and field squad opened up the 2015 portion of their schedule with a trip to the Susquehanna Maroon and Orange Invitational in Selinsgrove on Friday.
The team scores were not kept during the meet.
Spartan head coach Stephen LoBianco was pleased with the performance of his squad coming off winter break.
"The guys looked very good after being away from the track for other a month," said LoBianco. "We had a number of guys put up PR's. Many of the guys put in solid work over the break to put them in the top six in their respective events."
The day started with Ian O'Brien (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) earning a third place finish in the weight throw. O'Brien registered a best throw of 14.07 meters.
Sophomore Joseph Lalli (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) posted a sixth place finish in the triple jump for the Spartans. Lalli's best jump was marked at 12.14 meters. Senior Drew Chowhan (Flanders, N.J./Roxbury) put in a strong showing in the pole vault as he finished third with a best height of 4.25 meters. Freshman James Novak (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) placed sixth in the high jump as the first year Spartan cleared a height of 1.78 meters.
Sophomore Darien Gray (Bladensburg, Md./Gonzaga) was outstanding in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 8.69 to advance to the finals. Gray followed that with a runner up finish in the finals as he completed the race in a time of 8.57. Junior Darnell Tillman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) earned a second place finish in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.20. Tillman didn't participate in the finals as he was prepping for the 400-meter dash. Tillman made the most of his preparation for the 400 as he won the event with a time of 50.66. He won the event by .13 seconds.
Freshman Matthew Morgan (Ulysses, Pa./Northern Potter) put together a solid performance in the one-mile run as he placed eighth with a time of 4:38.25.
The Green and White got a pair of strong performances in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Dylan Hartlaub (Manchester, Pa./York County Tech) and senior Okera Beidleman (Germantown, Md./Northwest) both posted top four finishes in the event. Hartlaub finished third with a time of 2:02.40 while Beidleman placed fourth with a time of 2:02.48.
Gray earned a third place finish in the 200-meter dash as the sophomore registered a time of 23.82. Junior Sebastian Hall (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) finished fifth in the event with a time of 24.05.
The Spartans' 4x400 relay squad consisting of Beidleman, Hartlaub, Daniel Caldwell (Chester, Md./Kent Island), and Gray, combined to earn a third place finish with a time of 3:35.82.
York concluded the day with a great showing in the 3000-meter run as four Spartans registered top ten finishes. Freshman Grant Dell (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) placed fifth with a time of 9:19.36. Senior Wil Murray (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) finished sixth with a time of 9:20.70. Senior Craig Eppler (Bethlehem, Pa./Northampton) placed eight with a time of 9:22.41 while sophomore Colin Fleming (Owings, Md./Northern) was tenth with a time of 9:29.48.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, January 23 when they travel to the Ursinus College Invitational. The meet is slated for a 3:00 pm start in Collegeville, Pa.
