COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The York College men's track and field team looked strong out of the gates to open the 2014-15 indoor season as the Spartans captured a sixth place finish out of 19 teams at the Bow Tie Classic hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday.
Darnell Tillman (Enola, Pa. / East Pennsboro) headlined the Spartan effort today with a record-setting performance in the 400 meter dash. Tillman took home a second place finish as he set the school indoor record with a time of 51.50.
The men's 4x200 meter relay team of Tillman, Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md. / Marriotts Ridge), Sebastian Hall (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) and Tim Pechart (Hanover, Pa. / South Western) captured at first place finish with a time of 1:34.40.
A trio of Spartans claimed top-10 finishes in the pole vault, led by Drew Chowhan (Flanders, N.J. / Roxbury) who took a second place finish with a height of 14 feet, four and three-quarter inches. Chowhan nearly tied the school record, which is set at 14 feet, six inches.
Freshman Kevin Landis (Lincoln University, Pa. / Avon Grove) took home a fifth place finish in the pole vault at height of 13 feet, 11 inches and freshman Darris Rodrigues came in 10th with a vault of 12 feet, 11 inches.
Sophomore Darien Gray (Bladensburg, Md. / Gonzaga) started off the season on a positive note, capturing a pair of fifth place finishes. Gray turned in a time of 8.70 in the 60 meter hurdles and a time of 23.77 in the 200 meter dash.
Veteran Craig Eppler (Bethlehem, Pa. / Northampton) started his 2014-15 campaign with a seventh placed finish in the 3000 meter run with a time 9:22.58.
Thrower Robert Doster ( Middletown, Pa. / Middletown) looked solid in his season debut as he took a home a ninth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 41 feet, ten and a half inches.
The Spartans will take a break from competition over the upcoming holiday season and will return to action on Saturday, January 17 at the Maryland Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
