Spartans Ready for 2014 CAC Indoor Track and Field Championships
YORK, Pa. - The York College of Pennsylvania men's and women's track and field teams are ready to compete at the 2014 Track and Field Championships. Hosted by Christopher Newport University, the meet will be run on Saturday, February 22nd.
Both teams will enter the championships as contenders for the titles, and will look to score multiple points.
For the men, the Spartans enter with a deep squad that has set multiple school records over the season. In their only scored meet of the season the Spartan men were able to tie for first among the 17 teams at the Ursinus Invitational. The Spartans are feeling confident and will look to crack the top 3 of the CAC, as they did in 2013.
Coach LoBianco on the men's team, "The men's team has a chance to come home with multiple points scoring efforts in almost every event."
The Spartans will look to capitalize on the strong efforts of their throws squad. Leading the Spartans all year has been Eddie Kraft (Brick, N.J. / Brick Memorial) and Terez Beauford (Parkville, Md. / Loch Raven) and they will look to help the Spartans earn top 3 in the weight and shot put.
In the sprints, the Spartans will look to Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md. / Marriotts Ridge) will look to provide leadership for the young squad. The squad looks prepared by breaking two school records in the relay events.
Coach LoBianco states, "Freshmen Darien Gray (Bladensburg, Md./Gonzaga) has been having a great freshmen season in the 60m HH and will look to continue his success this weekend."
The Spartans will look to their distance squad depth to help them rack up points on Saturday. The distance squad will be led by the defending mile and 5,000 meter champion, Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin). The squad's strength lies in their depth and quality of runners, as the team will look to push their CAC foes. The team will look to grab many crucial top six place finishes, to build up their point totals.
For the women, The Spartans enter with a smaller squad that is filled with quality athletes.
The women have multiple CAC Athletes of the Week, and will look to improve upon their third place performance from 2013.
Coach LoBianco on the women's team, "We have the talent to make an impact on the conference this year as many athletes set PRs at the last meet and are ready to have great races at conferences."
For the field events, the York women will look to sophomore Bethany Miller (York, Pa. / York Suburban). Miller has already leaped to a school record height once this year, and will look to continue her success at Christopher Newport. Also helping the field event squad will be another sophomore Abbey Rhodes (Hanover, Pa. / Hanover).
Coach LoBianco on Rhodes, "Abbey Rhodes has been throwing well this year, and with more school record length throws could put herself in contention for a top three in the shot put."
In the sprints, the women will be led by sophomore Bria Jones (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford). Jones will look to capitalize off her 2013 performance that helped her grab second in the 60 dash and ninth in the 200.
The distance squad will be led by juniors Caroline DeLany (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) and Jess Miller (Dauphin, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) who have set and reset multiple records in multiple events throughout the indoor season. Freshman Emily Cronise (Boonsboro, Md. / Boonsboro) will also be a threat to many CAC runners with her record setting work on the year.
