Hartung Captures Another Win at CAC Championships
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College men's track and field squad finished fourth of six teams at the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Christopher Newport University on Sunday in Newport News, VA.
The Spartans finished with 70 points, narrowly missing third place as Mary Washington totaled 74 points. Salisbury won the men's championship with 198 points while Christopher Newport was second with 172.
The Spartans got a second first place finish from senior All-American Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) as he captured top honors in the 5K. Hartung finished the race with a time of 15:32.06. It is the third time in his illustrious Spartan career that he has won the CAC 5K crown.
Sophomore Darnell Tillman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) put together a pair of stellar finishes in the 200 and 400 meter dashes. Tillman placed third in the 200 with a time of 22.32. He then notched a sixth place finish in the 400 with a time of 50.25.
The duo of Alexander Palescandolo (Derwood, Md./Magruder) and Terez Beauford (Parkville, Md./Loch Raven) earned the Spartans with points in the discus. Palescandolo placed fourth in the event with a best throw of 40.81 meters while Beauford finished sixth with a distance of 38.98 meters.
Freshman James Gonzales (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) set a new PR with his fifth place finish in the 800 as he crossed the line in a time of 1:57.44. Another freshman, Darien Gray (Bladensburg, Md./Gonzaga) finished fourth in the 110 hurdles as he recorded a time of 16.01.
Senior Eddie Kraft (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) closed out his CAC career with a sixth place finish in the shot, registering a best heave of 13.13 meters.
The Spartans got a new school record from the 4x400 relay team of Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge), Gonzales, Gray, and Tillman as the foursome combined to register a record time of 3:21.89. That time was good enough for a fourth place finish.
The 4x100 relay team of Banta, Sebastian Hall (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal), Tillman, and Tim Pechart (Hanover, Pa./South Western) earned a fifth place finish as they totaled a time of 43.16 in their race.
The Spartans close out their regular season on May 12 when they travel to the Tuppany Twilight Last Chance Meet hosted by Swarthmore.
