NEWPORTS NEWS, VA – The York College men's track and field squad sits third of six teams after the first day of the Capital Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Christopher Newport University on Saturday in Newport News, VA.
The Spartans got a win in the 10,000 as senior Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) is competing in his final CAC championships. Hartung completed the race in a time of 32:47.55 as he won the race by over eight seconds. Teammate Colin Fleming (Owings, Md./Northern) finished fourth as he completed the event with a time of 34:17.99 to earn four team points for the Green and White.
The Spartans also got strong performances from the duo of Robert Doster (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) and Alex Aponte (Delran, N.J./Delran) in the javelin. Doster finished second with a best toss of 55.40 meters. Aponte finished fourth with a best distance of 51.85. The duo earned 12 team points for the Green and White with their performances.
Freshman Andrew Sarver (Olney, Md./Sherwood) recorded a fifth place finish in the triple jump as he cleared a best distance of 12.48 meters. Sophomore Terez Beauford (Parkville, Md./Loch Raven) posted a sixth place finish in the hammer throw with a throw of 40.74 meters.
In preliminary events, Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) finished eighth in the 100 with a time of 11.22. Darnell Tillman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) placed fifth in the 200-meter dash prelims with a time of 22.25. Darien Gray (Bladensburg, Md./Gonzaga) recorded a sixth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.07. All three Spartans advance to the finals of their respective events on Sunday.
The championships continue tomorrow morning in Newport News, VA.
