SHIPPENSBURG, PA - The York College men's track and field squad participated in the 2014 Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University on Saturday in Shippensburg, PA. The meet was a non-scoring meet and featured a number of the top Division II teams in the region.
The Spartans got some great performances especially from their distance runners. Junior Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) finished fourth of 67 runners in the 1,500 meter race. He clocked in with a time of 4:03.52.
Stetson also performed well in the 3,000 meter race as he placed seventh with a time of 9:11.41. Teammate Matt Hayes (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) placed fifth in the 3K as he notched a time of 9:09.13.
York had a strong contingent of runners in the 10,000 meter race. Senior All-American Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) finished third in the race, crossing the line in a time of 34:28.75. Connor Simpson (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) was right behind Hartung, finishing just 0.04 seconds behind him in fourth place. Colin Fleming (Owings, Md./Northern) recorded a sixth place finish with a time of 34:41.37 while Rafi Fernandez (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) placed ninth with a time of 36:24.34.
In the sprint events, Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) notched a tenth place finish in the 200 meter dash. Banta clocked in with a time of 22.79. Sophomore Darnell Tillman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) placed eighth in the 400 meter dash as he finished with a time of 50.71. Junior Okera Beidleman (Germantown, Md./Northwest) placed 11th in the 800 with a time of 1:57.18.
In the 400 hurdles, freshman Darien Gray (Bladensburg, Md./Gonzaga) notched a seventh place finish in the event with a time of 56.79. Senior Joseph Corrigan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) recorded a ninth place finish in the 3000 steeplechase as he finished the race with a time of 11:11.01.
In the throws, Robert Doster (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) placed fifth in the javelin with a best toss of 48.89 meters. Teammate Alex Aponte (Delran, N.J./Delran) placed ninth in the javelin with a toss of 44.34 meters. Sophomore Terez Beauford (Parkville, Md./Loch Raven) was York's top finisher in the discus as he placed 11th with a distance of 39.01 meters.
The Spartans return to action a week from today as they participate in the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference championships hosted by Christopher Newport University. The championships are a two day event that concludes on Sunday afternoon.
