Relays Smash Records for York Men

SELLINSGROVE, Pa. – The York men's track and field team returned to Susquehanna University for the Susquehanna Invite on Friday.  The team was able to set multiple records and prepare for the CAC Championships.

In the field events, Terez Beauford (Parkville, Md. / Loch Raven) started the day off with a school record toss in the weight throw.  In the finals on his last throw, Beauford launched the weight 49-0.75 to take third place.  His toss bested his previous school record by six inches.  Taking 8th place in the weight throw, Alexander Aponte (Delran, N.J. / Delran) had solid toss of 44-0.75 just an inch off of his personal best.  Eddie Kraft (Brick, N.J. / Brick Memorial) had a sixth place toss in the shot put with a throw of 44-8.75.  Robert Doster (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown) followed Kraft and took 8th with a career best throw of 42-9.75. In the triple jump York had a 6th place finisher with Andrew Sarver (Olney, Md. / Sherwood) leaping to 41-2.25.

For the sprints, the relays lead the way for York with two school records.  The 4x200m team (Gray, Tillman, Hall, Banta) raced to a second place finish.  The team ran the race in 1:33.33 to best the old school record, from 2010, by over a tenth of a second.  Not to be outdone the 4x400 team (Banta, Gonzales, Smart, Tillman) raced out a 2nd place finish.  The team was able to best the 2011 record by almost two seconds with a time of 3:31.19. The speedy Ryan Banta (Ellicott City, Md. / Marriotts Ridge) continued his season of consistency, with a 4th place time of 7.26 in the 60 dash.  Darnell Tillman (Enola, Pa. / East Pennsboro) raced to a 5th place finish that was just two hundredths off his personal record with a time of 52.80 in the 400.  Ricky Jones (Tamaqua, Pa. / Blue Mountain) ran to a personal best in the 200 dash with a time of 23.52 that placed him 4th for the day.

In the distance events, James Gonzales (Baltimore, Md. / Dundalk) led the way with his school record performance in the 800.  Gonzales became the first indoor track man in York history to break the two minute barrier with his 6th place performance of 1:59.51.  His time was able to place him 6th in the event.  Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) and Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa. / Governor Mifflin) took first and second in the mile with times of 4:26.87 and 4:31.73, respectively.   In the 3,000, Matt Hayes (Drexel Hill, Pa. / Cardinal O'Hara) led a large York contingent to grab his personal best time of 9:11.43 that placed him sixth in the event.  Other York competitors in the 3,000 were Wil Murray (Cape May Court House, N.J. / Middle Township) (9:14.74), Craig Eppler (Bethlehem, Pa. / Northampton) (9:19.79), and Patrick Morrison (New Freedom, Pa. / Susquehannock) (9:26.11) all finishing in a row behind Hayes.

York now looks to close out the indoor season as they prepare for the CAC Championships that will be hosted at Christopher Newport next weekend.
