Spartans Shine in Shippensburg
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The York College men's track and field team had an extremely strong day at the Paul Kaiser Track & Field Classic held at Shippensburg University on Saturday.
By the end of the meet, many Spartans tied if not bested their personal bests.
Head Coach Erick Camodeca is pleased with the way his squad performed today.
"It was the best meet of the year for our entire team this year," said Camodeca. "It's a great way to head into the conference championship meet next weekend."
Sean Welsh (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) continued to be strong in the sprints. Welsh tied his personal best in the 100-meter dash. He ran a 10.97 in the race and finished in fifth place.
In the 400, John Follety (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) had a great finish to help him finish at a season best time of 52.65 and place in the top 20.
Okera Beidleman (Germantown, Md./Northwest) ran a nice even split race in the 800 meters. Beidleman finished with a season best time of 2:01.68. Camodeca was pleased with his performance and knows that it was a great confidence booster.
Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) once again looked strong for the Spartans on the distance end. Stetson ran a PR in the 1,500 with a time of 4:04.55. Camodeca feels that Stetson has it in him to run even faster.
The 5k saw Matt Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) with a break through run. Smith finished in eighth place with a time of 16:06.70. Also running a strong race was Joey Orlando (Minotola, N.J./Buena Regional) as he finished with a personal record time of 16:28.77.
The 4X100 relay had a good time, especially with Follety subbing in the first leg of the race. The team of Follety, Welsh, Sebastian Hall (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) and Phillip Cavaluchi (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) recorded a fifth place finish with a time of 42.94.
The Spartans 4X400 relay ran a season best time. Follety, Okera, Hall and Darnell Tillman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) clocked a 3:30.95 for ninth place. Camodeca is extremely happy with the relay and felt that they did a great job.
Cavaluchi was the final Spartan of the day to earn a season best jump. According to Camodeca, Cavaluchi is really starting to feel and look good heading into conference championships. In the long jump, Cavaluchi recorded a distance of 6.92 meters and a sixth place finish. Also jumping his best was Hall as he finished with a personal record in the event. Hall came in 19th place with a jump of 6.37 meters. Both jumpers have put themselves in good positions for CAC's.
The Spartans return to action Saturday at Salisbury University for the Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. The meet is set to begin at 3:00 pm and will run through Sunday evening.
