LANDOVER, Md. – The York College men's indoor track and field team competed in the Terrapin Invitational at Maryland on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans had a strong showing against some tough competition.
Head coach Erick Camodeca said he is happy with his teams' performances today and believes they are right where they need to be.
Sophomore Sean Welsh (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) looked tremendous all day. Camodeca said that he came out blazing, that his starts were almost flawless. Walsh broke the 60 meter dash school record with a time of 7.10, earning him a sixth place finish. The previous record was 7.14 and was set in February 2012. He also looked strong in the 200 meter dash with a 14th place finish and a time of 23.59.
Transfer Andrew Langston (Jacobus, Pa./Dallastown) started his Spartan career with an impressive showing in the 60 meter dash. Langston finished in 18th with a time of 24.22.
Phillip Cavaluchi (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) opened up his senior season in great style by qualifying for the finals in both the long jump and the 60 meter dash. In the 60 meter dash, Cavaluchi finished in 7.26 seconds. In the long jump, he recorded a leap of 6.55 meters.
Michael Stetson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) was able to put together two solid races. Camodeca said he was able to come away from the meet feeling confident after struggling through injuries all last season. Stetson finished the mile in 23rd with a time of 4:39.97. He then took 17th in the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:33.62.
Demetrice Cox (York, Pa./Dallastown) came in seventh in the 300 meter dash with a time of 38.09. He was able to cut away from his time from earlier in the season. Camodeca said that next week will be a big week for him because he will open up in the 400 meter dash.
Freshman Joshua Malerich (York, Pa./West York Area) put in a gutsy effort in the 600 meter dash. He placed 12th and recorded a time of 1:30.96. Camodeca feels that the more experience he gains in the sport, the better he will become. He is a tough competitor that can become a quality contributor to the Spartan squad.
Next up for the Spartans is the George Mason Patriot Games on January 26 at 10:00 am.
