DMR Record Falls; Spartans Compete at Terrapin Invitational
LANDOVER, Md. – The York College men's track & field team competed at the 2012 Indoor Terrapin Invitational on Saturday hosted by the University of Maryland – College Park. The Spartans finished with 27 points on the day to nab 11th out of the 17 teams in attendance.
One of the Green and White's best performances came from their distance medley relay team as they broke the program record in the event by over three seconds. Steven Childres, Joquan Jamison, Michael Stetson, and Tim Hartung combined to record an 11:16.75, breaking the previous mark of 11:19.78 set last February.
The 5,000-meter run saw a trio of Spartans, including Childres and Hartung, post quality finishes. Childres, the reigning Capital Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, posted a strong 15:49.28 to secure eighth place for York, which proved the best individual Spartan finish of the day. Hartung, who qualified for the 2011 NCAA National Men's Cross Country Championships early this year, notched a 15:49.31 to finish just one spot and three-hundredths-of-a-second behind Childres. Senior Andrew Friesema placed 12th in the event as he ran to a 15:57.67.
Junior Phillip Cavaluchi put together a solid effort for the Green and White. In the long jump, the Spartan leapt to a 12th place finish with a distance of 20' 7.25" while he took 28th in the 60-meter dash with a 7.36 time.
In the high jump, Zach Rogers grabbed ninth place with a 6' 6.25" height while Jamison ran to a 20th place time in the 200-meter dash with a 23.65. Sean McGinley posted a 1:36.88 to take 19th in the 600-meter run.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday as they travel to the Patriot Games at George Mason University, the site of next month's inaugural Capital Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Patriot Games, slated for January 28, are scheduled for a 10:00 am start.
