Edwards, Hartung Lead York to Outstanding Performance at Kaiser Classic
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The York College men's track & field team put on a strong performance at Saturday's Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University. The Spartans, who set two school records, picked up six individual top-tens in the non-scored meet including a trio of runner-up finishes.
Highlighting the Green and White's Saturday, senior hurdler Ben Edwards captured a second-place time in the 400-meter hurdles as he crossed the line in 53.34 just .02 off the victor's time. That outstanding effort from Edwards allowed him to not only break his own school record in the event but also provisionally qualify for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor National Championship meet.
Rookie sensation Tim Hartung established a new Spartan-best in the 3,000 meters as he continues his outstanding freshman campaign. Hartung's second-place time of 8:54.42 proved only one of two times below the nine-minute mark at the Kaiser Classic while he sets a new program-standard in the event.
Fellow distance runner Andrew Friesema posted a 9:50.49 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he also snagged second overall.
Steven Childres recorded two top-ten finishes on Saturday, taking seventh in the 3,000 meters and eighth in the 5,000. The Spartan sophomore ran a 9:23.67 in the 3k and notched a 15:46.35 in the 5k.
In the high jump, Zach Rogers placed seventh with a leap of 1.85 meters. Fellow jumper Gregory Gray leapt a distance of 6.55 meters in the long jump while pole-vaulters Zak Kriesmer and Zach Schober each posted a height of 3.90 meters.
York returns to action on Sunday, May 7, when they travel to New York, New York for the NYC Qualifying Challenge at Icahn Stadium. Start time is slated for 12:00 pm.
