York Relays Give Spartans Strong Opening to Outdoor Campaign
YORK, Pa. – The York College men's track & field squad hosted the York Relays Saturday to kick off their 2011 home slate. The Spartans put on a quality showing in their first home outdoor meet of the season, helping them to get off to a strong start.
Senior Ben Edwards had an awesome performance as he posted a 57.11 in the 400 hurdles. That time not only allotted Edwards the victory but is also a tremendous starting point for what could prove to be an outstanding season.
In the 3,000 steeplechase, fellow senior Andrew Friesema put together a 10:15.10 in the event. That effort also saw him take first and is another solid starting point.
York's 4x400 team also captured a victory, which included a terrific anchor leg by Le Von White. Heading into the final lap, Washington & Jefferson led by over 75 meters. A determined White snagged the baton and quickly began making up distance and needed approximately 200 meters before scooting by his opponent. White's effort gave the Spartans a nice win to end the meet.
In the throws, senior Zack Raywood nabbed first in the javelin with a toss of 156' 8" while his 119' 2" toss in the discus awarded him a second-place finish. Marcus Bailey took third in the discus event with a throw of 111' even.
York's long jumpers, who were only taking half approaches, went 2-3-4 in the event. Jerry Bowers registered second with a leap of 20' 1" while defending Capital Athletic Conference champion Phillip Cavaluchi notched a 20' 0.25" jump. Gregory Gray came in fourth for the Spartans with a 19' 4.75" leap.
"I am very happy with our performance today," Spartan head coach Erick Camodeca said. "Overall it is a nice way for the majority of the team to break open the outdoor season."
The Spartans return to action on Friday, March 18, as they are slated to travel to Annville, Pa. for the Lebanon Valley Invitational. The meet is set for a 3:00 pm start.
