COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The York College men's track & field squad returned to action on Thursday evening at the Ursinus College Open indoor meet. The Spartans posted a solid showing in Collegeville, Pa. as they took second out of the six programs in attendance, tallying 146 total points.
The highlight of the meet for the Green and White proved to be York's quality performance in the 5,000 meters. In the 5k, the Spartans snagged three of the top four spots and broke the previous program record (16:55.20, set just last year) by nearly 20 seconds. Freshman sensation Tim Hartung won the event with an outstanding 15:55.23, as he is now the new program record-holder in the event. Sophomore Steven Childres came in right behind Hartung, taking second with a 15:56.89. Senior Andrew Friesema was the third Spartan to cross the line, finishing fourth overall with a 16:12.06.
In addition to his second-place time in the 5,000 meters, Childres also registered a fourth-place finish in the mile with a 4:41.17.
York's long jumpers also put together an exceptional day as they went 1-2-3 in the event. Phillip Cavaluchi, the reigning Capital Athletic Conference outdoor long jump champion, finished first with a 20' 7.75" leap. Fellow sophomore Jerry Bowers took second at 19' 11" while rookie Greg Gray snagged third with a 19' 2" distance.
Austin Dubos posted a top-two finish for the Green and White, as he took second in the shot put with a 40' 3.25" toss.
Craig Eppler (3,000 meters) and Tyler Quill (high jump) each snagged runner-up finishes for the Green and White.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday, February 20, when they travel to the Mason Dixon Conference Indoor Championships. Meet time from Christopher Newport University is slated for a 10:00 am start.
