ANNVILLE, PA - A contingent of the York College men's track & field squad posted a fantastic outing today at the 2010 Lebanon Valley College Indoor Invitational. The Spartans, who only took seven student-athletes from their 37-member squad, finished fourth out of eleven schools missing out on third-place by one point and second by a mere three.
"I am so proud of how these guys performed today," head coach Erick Camodeca said of the seven Spartans at the LVC Invitational. "Our main reason and goal of the meet was to get some extra work in and these guys really went out competed."
Freshman Phil Cavaluchi (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville Area) put on an outstanding showing for the Green and White at the LVC Invitational. The Spartan rookie took first in the long jump, shattering York's previous indoor best by leaping 20' 10.5." That stupendous effort topped the previous mark by over a foot and a half. In addition to his work in the long jump, Cavaluchi posted a second-place finish in the 55-meter dash, logging a time of 6.84 seconds in the finals.
Senior sprinter Thomas Kentouris (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Saint Edmund's Prep) was the only student-athlete to top Cavaluchi's 55-meter final time, as he took first in the event with a 6.83.
Ben Edwards (Howell, N.J./Howell) scored second-place points for the Green and White in the 55-meter hurdles. After notching the top-time in the preliminaries, Edwards ran to a strong 8.27 in the finals, just missing the current Spartan indoor record by a mere four-hundredths.
York's outstanding sprint relay squads each registered second-place finishes at LVC. The 4x200 team of Kentouris, Chris Camodeca (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area), Cavaluchi, and Darren McKoy (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) - the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference Rookie-of-the-Year - turned in a 1:41.64.
Edwards and Todd Humphrey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) joined Kentouris and Camodeca in the 4x400 relay as the four combined for a time of 3:49.99. Edwards opened the race with a spectacular lead-off leg for the Spartans while Camodeca closed with a strong anchor.
Freshman Jerry Bowers (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) added second-place points to York's overall total by finishing second in the long jump with a 20' 3.5" leap. Bowers' mark would have easily established a new school record if not for Cavaluchi's exploits.
Humphrey, in addition to his solid work in the 4x400 relay, nabbed fifth in the 55-meter hurdles.
McKoy established the program's 300-meter record by running to a 41.42 and taking tenth.
The Green and White return to action, with a full squad, on February 13 when the Spartan travel to Susquehanna University. The Susquehanna Indoor Invitational is set for a 10:00 a.m. start in Selinsgrove, Pa.
